Defect may not be the correct word (depends on your outlook maybe).

I have a young goldfish (< 1 year) which, as best as I can tell, has its
intestine sticking out of its butt about a cm. Not sure when this
happened, but it has been noticable for about a month or so. Apart from
being a little unsightly this fish seems to be perfectly healthy and is
growing very quickly.

Has anyone else seen this before?

if it truly is intestine,
http://www.weloveteaching.com/puregold/disease/symptom/anal_port.html
but it could be poop hanging out, maybe a worm hanging out, maybe a tumor of some
kind. pictures are needed. Ingrid

Definitely not feces or a worm. Doesn't look anything like that picture
either. I don't have a digital camera but, what I see is a normal looking
juvenile fish (about 4 cm tip to tip) with a white tube-like protrusion
about a cm long an a mm wide coming from its anus. Its feces even look
normal... except for the fact that they come out of the end of this tube.
I'm thinking that it's something like a kind of fishy hernia but don't
know for sure.

well if it's not the rude bits droppin before spawning, it may well be a
prolapsed rectum.
Common causes include an internal tumor, ball of worms or serious blockage
(pooing normal so not likely)
As long as allz good I wouldn't worry.
Maybe worm it
but if it goes down hill
put it down hey
