Hi there,
Does anyone of you have any suggestions about what might have caused our
doggy suddenly to have a rash with little lumps all over his back, and what
the rash is exactly?
Our dog does already have skin-problems since the age of 6 months.
After a swim in the water, he always was still a bit wet after several
hours, we assumed due to a very thick under-coat.
So, thrice every year, we have his coat shaved.
This year we went to another lady to have him shaved, and after that she
washed him with a special, anti-allergic shampoo.
After the shave we walked home; took about half an hour in the bright
morning sunlight.
And then, one day later, suddenly the rash had developed.
So offcourse, it is very likely that it has been caused by the shaving of
his coat (very short, so his skin can 'breath' well again, and will not
remain wet for several hours anymore), or the shampoo that he has been
washed with afterwards (although it was a special, anti-allerhic shampoo),
or maybe the direct sunlight on his skin for about half an hour.
The rash consists of very little, red-colored lumps, about half a centimeter
in diameter, currently mainly on his back, and a bit in his neck.
Obviously thay also are very itchy, since a few on his neck have already
been scratched sore.
Does anyone of you have had the same experience?
And what was the treatment?
With kind regards, and thanks in advance,
Ruud Overman

I heard vet on the TV just this morning say that you shouldn't shave
any animal too close. Animals that are shaved too close can get
sunburn since there isn't enough hair on their backs to protect them
from the sun. He recommended that if shedding was a problem the
animal should be brushed every day to get rid of the excess hair.
I had a friend (human) who would break out in a red itchy rash after
she had been in the sun. Maybe your dog is suffering from sun
poisoning.

I am sorry to say I was a bit horrified you have shaved your dog.
A dogs coat is to protect your dog.
Unless you have a poodle ,Bichon or similar type.
Plus washing a dog takes all the oils out of him.
I would stop shaving and washing him and go back to basics.
Dogs should not be washed more than twice a year so they say.
It could be a flea allergy.
If you go to the vet they will weigh your dog and give you the correct
dosage.
Hope this helps.

> I am sorry to say I was a bit horrified you have shaved your dog.
Have you gotten more than one (professional) opinion about shaving him? From
a vet? It just doesn't sound right to me. Is he pure, or some kind of mix?
If a mix, I can imagine some strange combination of genes making this a
requirement... I've never heard of this being required for any dog, but then
again, I am FAR from an expert. He won't towel off? Maybe you need to avoid
getting him wet, or perhaps live with a wet dog for a few hours.
What food is he on? Could this be causing funny things with his coat? I
really don't know, just taking shots in the dark here...

I would get him to the vet right away. There are some serious illnesses that
start with a rash, such as the tick-borne disease Rocky Mountain Spotted
Fever. Prompt treatment is critical.
It seems likely that the shaving, bath, etc. could cause skin irritation, but
if it were my dog, I would not assume that was the case.

Hi Nan,
Obviously, in your opinion the sunlight caused his skin to have all this
rash?
We are already taking that possibility into account; during this period, we
will avoid the direct sunlight as much as possible, and we have a long walk
in the late evening, almost at sunset.
Next time we will have him not shaved as short as he has been shaved this
time.
Thanks for your reaction,
With kind regards,
Ruud

Hi Pat,
Offcourse, in the past we have first tried to solve this problem by brushing
him well, but this did not solve our problem entirely. So, some time ago, we
read a monthly newsletter from a club (the so called Nederlandse Labrador
Vereniging) that we are member of, and in this newsletter the shaving
solution was suggested.
And we have noticed that it is not that very rare that Labradors are being
shaved.
Until now, we have never encountered any problems at all.
I do agree with you that washing the dog has not been our brightest idea,
and we have decided that this has been the last time that he has been
washed.
I don't think that it is a flea allergy, since we have not encountered any
fleas on his body yet.
We have already an appointment with our vet, because we noticed that the
rash is not decreasing.
Thanks for your reaction,
With kind regards,
Ruud

Hi Ralph,
We do not think it has been caused by ant bites, since our dog has not been
lying on the ground for long times.
An insect may be possible; we already have an appointment with our vet.
Thanks for your reaction,

Hi Amy,
I was a bit frightened by your answer, and I immediately started looking for
information about Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever on Internet.
I found the following text:
"Rocky Mountain spotted fever is found throughout the United States, except
in Maine, Alaska, and Hawaii. Despite the name, few cases are reported from
the Rocky Mountain region. Most cases occur in the southeastern United
States. Rocky Mountain spotted fever is spread by the American dog tick, the
lone-star tick, and the wood tick, all of which like to live in wooded areas
and tall, grassy fields. The disease is most common in the spring and summer
when these ticks are active, but it can occur anytime during the year when
the weather is warm."
This article suggests that RMSF has not yet been diagnosed in the
Netherlands (where we live), so we assume that the chance that our dog has
been infected with this disease is very little.
But we will pay our vet a visit anyway, since the rash occurs to be
persistent.
Thanks for your reaction,
With kind regards,
Ruud Overman

Hi Rudd,
I think it is very wrong to shave a coat of any dog that isn't
the type that should be shaved.
I know they shave Old English Sheepdogs.
Plus poodle type dogs get clipped.
However I personally would never shave a Labrador.
Their coats protect them~plus you have to think about the natural oils they
make .
Is it possible to send me a photo of the problem you have with the dog?
I would like to try to help you with your problem but very hard here.
Plus could you tell me what food and treats the dog has please?
Pat.

Hi Ralph,
The vet came to the conclusion that the (very short) shaving of his coat may
have cause little injuries on his skin, and then bacteria saw their chances
to have these injuries inflamed.
According to her, this is the most propable cause of his rash.
So, in the first instance, she gave us a very special shampoo to wash him
(from teh brand Virbac, and the type is Paxcutol shampoo) in order to have
his skin cleaned well.
We have to wash him twice the first week (and be very aware that he might
also have an allergic reaction to this shampoo, although our vet had never
experienced any allergic dog to be also allergic to this shampoo).
Then for 2 weeks, once a week.
After 3 weeks, the rash should be gone.
Yesterday, we first have washed a very little spot of his skin, and indeed
today we saw nothing suspicious.
So today, we have washed him fully the first time.
With kind regards,
Ruud
