Post subject: What am I doing wrong?
Archived from groups: alt>pets>parrots>budgerigars (more info?)

I have had cockatiels for 2 1/2 years and decided to try parakeets. The
first one I bought was from a local pet store and apparently was very
stressed and ill when I got him. He seemed active and happy, but was very
small and thin. Not having had keets before, I didn't realize how thin he
was. He passed a month after I bought him. I took him to an avian vet for
a necropsy and she said that he never had a chance, that he must have been
too far gone when I got him. By then I had purchased a second bird with the
intention that she be his mate. She was much bigger and was a happy healthy
bird. Until Christmas eve. I don't know if Santa did her in or what.
Christmas morning she was dead in the bottom of her cage.

The birds all get fresh food and water daily, along with treats a couple of
times a week. The tiels are all fine. What happened? Are parakeets harder
to keep than cockatiels? I really liked the two birds that I had and would
like to get more, but not if I cannot figure out what is happening to them.
Both birds where less than a year old.

Thank you in advance for any assistance.
Anita

Where are you keeping these birds? Try to keep them out of the kitchen, as
the various fumes and vapours can be hazardous to their health.

Also, what are you feeding them? Make sure they are getting all of their
required nutrients.

Don't forget to play with them every day. Birds that are loved will live
longer.

Hope this helps.

She was getting a seed mix, pellets, a cuttlebone & a mineral block. Our
house is very open, she was in the living room, but that is not very far
from the kitchen. Wouldn't any fumes also be effecting the cockatiels
though? They are doing very well.

Did you follow quarantine procedures? Did you sterilise the cage the first
bird was in and ensure that the necropsy didn't show that it had a virus? If
not, then placing a new bird in the old cage will probably mean that the
first bird had an infection which the second one caught when it was pced in
the cage. I hope you didn't allow the first bird anywhere near your tiels .
Don't buy from large pet stores. There take birds from parrot breeders all
over the country, some of those breeders will have disease on the premises
and not want to say anything as nobody would buy from them. They don't want
to lose their business.

Like oldmolly said "too far gone" is not a diagnosis or a cause of death. Did
you have the second bird necropsied?

Without specific details from the necropsy we can only speculate why the birds
died... could've been a thousand different things.

And no, budgies are no more difficult to keep than tiels.

If you do decide to give budgies another try, see if you can find a private
breeder and ask for a health warranty and take the little guy to the vet for a
well-bird check up.

Our first budgie lasted about 3 months and we found him dead in his cage.

we were told it is "one of those things" that can happen for no apparent
reason.

we now have 2 budgies and a parrot (not in the same cage! LOL) and all are
doing well.

*sigh*
There is always a cause of death. I seriously doubt you would find "one of
those things" listed in any vet medical books cited under "causes of death".

*who* told you this? Did you have a necropsy done? I hear so much rubbish
spread about by people who simply want to excuse the fact that their bird
died and they didn't care enough or could not be bothered enough to find out
why it died. Then they buy a new bird, stick it in the old cage and hey
presto *that* bird dies aswell. They don't care too much as the budgies are
cheap, and to cover their own stupidity or carelessness, they put it down to
"one of those things". I have kept and bred budgies now for over 30 years
and I cannot remember a single bird dying at a young age where the autopsy
showed 'Cause of death: one of those things, coupled with acute never had a
chance'.

These were my thoughts as well, Marco. Just another symptom of the
all-too-common "disposable pet" syndrome.....

You can't remember, so it must never have happened. Thats good reasoning.

Considering all of the numerous genetic defects that have been bred into
budgies as a by-product of breeding for all the pretty stuff, "just one of
those things" is nothing to get all pissy about.
