Yo Sphinx,
well, your Dad is sorta right.........calm would be nice for the birds,
but my birds, for instance, (rollers) my loft is right next to some
railroad tracks, where commuter trains go by every hour. Rattles the
loft, and is very loud,...........but the birds have gotten so used to
it, even when they're out, that they really don't pay it any mind.
Pigeons get used to their environment so that noise is really not a
problem.
The books are not gonna even come CLOSE to teaching you all you will
need to know, and your fathers advice, just from experience, is going
to be invaluable. I hope you and he get along well enough that you can
share in pigeon information.
What kind of pigeons are you going to raise? Are you gonna raise them
for their looks, or their flying performance? There are some absolutely
gorgeous breeds out there to be had. I prefer the performance type,
because they make me feel the way I did when I was a kid. Always wished
I could fly, so I raise the next best thing, and watch birds that can
fly!%^)
Racers are great. I just never wanted them because most of their flight
takes place where I cannot see them. Rollers give me everything I need.
But there are many other performance breeds out there. At least try to
have someone as your teacher, that raises the same breed you do, so
they can give you more info.
Sphinx, I'm 51 years old, and STILL need the advice of others that
raise pigeons. Everyones locations and birds are not the same, so all
info is not the same.
What works for me, might not work for you. If you bought the books and
read them a million times, and still don't know if 15mX15m is large
enough, then there is still alot of learning to do, and not enough info
in some of the books, no?
I wish you luck, and feel free to e-mail me, or ask questions here.
It's not a very busy group, but alot of quality pigeon people monitor
this group and will eventually reply.
Also, when you decide on the breeds(s) you want, you can "google" the
internet and search for "pigeon forums" and should be able to find a
site specific to your breed.
