Hey just wanted to let you know that my hamster, Ham*Star, won the Petco
regional Hamster Derby races in San Diego today.

There were 16 entrants in all. She was in the first heat and won it easily.
There were 2 other heats with syrians and 1 heat with dwarfs. Then the
winners of the 4 heats matched off in a final race, and Ham*Star won that to
take overall first place! The heat-winning dwarf failed to finish and was
exhausted by that point.

The track was only about 8 feet long, definitely not the international 10
meter course. Some hamster owners let their hamsters get too tired by
practice running them. I only let Ham*Star do a few practice runs. Track
alignment is also key -- the start is the most important part of the race.

Overall it was a great time. I was amazed to see so many hamster owners
there today.. it was too bad that not everybody entered their hamsters
because I must have seen 2 dozen there.

Congratulation! I've been waiting for that all month and totally
forgot about it today! Good point about not tiring them out before the
race.

I wanted to enter, but wasn't sure if I would (if I went). Were the
entrants' owners mostly kids or were there grown ups there, too?

It was about half and half. There were some very serious adult hamster
runners, and there were some kids too who were surprisingly competitive
there with their parents. It was about as multi-dimensional a group as I've
seen in awhile. People were having fun but you could tell they wanted to
win.

The next one is in September. I was amazed at how excited about hamsters
everyone there was.
