I've been keeping wine bottle corks for a friend of mine to make some
hand made decorations. She's recently told me she doesn't need any
more, at least for a while. Are they appropriate material to give to
hamsters and/or jerbils to play with and chew on? I've got a few dozens
of then and I am wondering if my pets wouldn't enjoy a lot with them.

My guess would be a definite no. Hamsters might chew and eat them and not
be able to pass them and maybe die. I know they should not be exposed to
anything cotton for that reason and I might be wrong about the cork but
until I found out for sure I would keep hamsters away.
I tried Google a bit but didn't find anything about it but there are many
sites I did not look at.

Good luck.

AJ

AJ sounds correct to me. We once had a dwarf hamster that got out of the
cage and chewed on a small rubber ball and died from it. Now it could be
the rubber (or urethane) is more toxic than cork but why take chances.
