Post subject: how much water?
Archived from groups: rec>pets>birds>pigeons (more info?)

I am having to feed a baby pigeon or white dove (I don't know which!)
because its parents seemed to have stopped feeding it. It is about 3 weeks
old I think - almost fully feathered except for head and under the wings and
lives in the dove cote. I'm feeding it a mixed high protein foodstuff with
added whole peanuts and grit but am not sure how much water to give it via
the flexible tube on syringe I have created. For last two evenings I have
given it 30 mls but is this too little or too much please?
Thanks.
Sally

Check the skin turgor.

Assess the droppings, if too dry, give it more.

Thanks. Not too sure how to check the skin turgor but the droppings appear
to be quite firm so I'll give it more today.

Dehydration can cause the skin to appear dry and wrinkled. Try to
tent the skin, or fold of skin over sternum and abdomen. Normally,
when skin is pinched, it will readily move and, on release, rapidly
return back to its normal, former position.

With dehydration, skin turgor is diminished. There's lag in the pinched
skinfold's return to its original state.

Well, don't give more to the point of overhydration. If the droppings are dry
and firm, increase fluid intake incrementaly, then reassess.
