Post subject: vitamin E allergy?
Archived from groups: rec>pets>dogs>health (more info?)

We have a wire fox terrier. Lately (the last 6-8 months) she
has been showing more and more of an apparent food allergy.

We have tried a variety of foods, taking her off of everything
else she eats, so that now all she gets to eat is the Hill's
z/d (chicken) diet prescribed by our vet. This also forms any
treats she gets. Yes, she also gets 2 or even Benadryl a day
to help counteract the itching - you can see that it helps.

My wife is wondering whether it is the vitamin E? The z/d has
about 450 IUs of E in it, which is rather high compared to
many of the other foods. Since she has been on the Hill's diet,
she has clearly gotten significantly worse. My wife also points
out that Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin, so it sticks
around for a moderately long time, and that possibly we are
just building it up in her system. Virtually every dog food
that we have found uses Vitamin E, and it seems that now all
venders use it in large quantities.

Any ideas? We have considered cooking for her ourselves, but
it seems much harder to get the portion sizes correct, and
we don't want her gaining weight.

Thanks,
John

it may not be the vitamin E .. Has she had any allergy tests? it
could be environmental. Track the weather/seasons. Has she been on the
z/d for the 6-8 months? My senior poodle is on hills d/d (potato/
venison). He is only allowed fruit/veggie treats. Most any of the
good quality foods will contain the omega fatty acids and vit e. Good
luck!
