Post subject: Does vinegar take pee smell out?

I just found a pair of dress shoes I have never worn with cat pee inside
them and on the floor of my closet. I got the shoes clean & they don't
smell, but now I'm sure all my clothes will smell like pee. I read somewhere
that a bowl of vinegar in the closet will eliminate odors. Does anyone know
if that works? I'll wash them all over the weekend I guess, but most of the
clothes on that side of the closet need dry cleaned, damn it. I've got a
bowl in the closet now and the vinegar itself smells pretty darn bad!
I'll really learn now to close my closet doors now. They've (which of the 7
cats it was, I don't know) done it to my husband's shoes before, but this is
the first time I've gotten it. Why do they like shoes, lol??? |

Yes, vinegar can be helpful. Use more than one container in a space like a
closet, and separate the clothing as much as possible to allow "air space"
around them. It is also helpful to set a few containers of charcoal
briquettes (the type used in outdoor grills) in the area and close the door.
Of course, make sure they are *plain* charcoal briquettes and not the type
that have been pre-treated with something to increase flammability!!!
If I were you, I would dispose of the shoes, even if they are expensive and
unworn. In addition to the problem of sanitation, urine sometimes seems to
have a "residual" effect where you may not notice it on the item but the
scent permeates the air around it.

Thanks MaryL. I already don't smell it when I open my closet due to the one
bowl I have in there now. I guess I will get rid of the shoes. That is
probably a thing no one will tell you (you smell like cat pee) but will talk

With seven cats I would start wondering why they are going in the
closet instead of the litter box.
How many boxes do you have, where are they positioned, what kind of
litter is in them, how often do you clean / scoop them, ETC. There
must be a reason they are using the closet instead of the litter
boxes. I have always heard that you should have AT LEAST one box per
cat and with that many cats the boxes should be scooped several times
a day!!

I've heard that too. We have seven boxes, one in each bedroom upstairs & 3
in the laundry room downstairs. We clean them every day. The thing with the
shoes has happened maybe 4 time in the last 3-4 years, usually on my hubby's
tennis shoes that he cuts grass in that lay in the nook by the back door.

Might as well say goodbye to that pair of shoes girl. I've
experienced cat p*ss in the shoes in the past and it can be pretty
infuriating. We have 8 resident felines, with plenty of cat boxes (in
fact, we go through roughly 75 lbs. of litter per week). I don't have
a cure for your problem, other than keeping your closet door
closed......for some reason, certain cats just plain like to pee in
shoes. On a lighter note.......even more cats seem to like to play in
shoes, which is always a lot of fun. You simply toss a little ball
into a shoe when a cat is watching, and sit back and enjoy the show.

I know, bonbon. We have one especially that likes to fetch water bottle lids
and have us throw them to bring back. Finally, she will take off with it and
later when we put on our shoes, there is the lid in there. When our tennis
shoes are on the living room floor & we're playing "the game" she'll drop
