Because I'm not happy unless everybody has a migraine and
feels nauseous ... it's asscam! This is video from a couple
of months ago, taken with the cheapie helmet cam mounted to
my rig. Once they're underway it's completely nauseating to
watch, but people who haven't seen it before might enjoy
watching how the dogs get the rig/sled in motion. Cinder,
who's in left wheel, takes particularly big jumps in the air.
To her right, the big black-and-white dog is Slick. Eclipse
is in left lead and Crow in right lead.

Wow, that looks exciting. They are so enthusiastic to get going.
They are fast.. It is amazing to watch that and see how much they love what
they are doing. It must be difficult to control them sometimes. How do you
get them to turn left or right?

That looks like fun!

You really get a feel for the power the dogs have. Watching a dog do what it
has been bred to do is thrilling.

Crow looks very fast, do you know why she was looking back, near the end of
the video?

Thanks for the movie!

I left that part in because I thought it might be
interesting. That's what a mistake looks like. I told the
dogs to "haw," but Crow went the wrong way. I hit the
brakes and told her to haw again and she did, but she was
unsure and so she looked around. She's gotten much more
confident and not only is her steering a lot more accurate
but she'll also pull the other dog around if he or she
(sometimes Slick runs lead, too) making a mistake.

I have one of these: http://www.outlawdogsleds.com/OUTLAW_DSR-FS.html
It's made out of mountain bike components, including
oversized disk brakes and BMX off-road tires (BMX because
it's got 20" wheels). But, because it's so light, the dogs
can drag it pretty far and fast while I'm still standing on
it. I put a snow hook on it and that has its own set of
issues.

I was surprised by the number of them up in Alaska, since
there's really no dryland racing up there. Apparently the
serious limited-class sprint racers like them because they
can train at sled speeds, which you can't do with a quad.

Oops, hit "send" too soon...

And I enjoyed watching it. I'll have to re-watch and look for the mistake,
though. :-)

Is the one on the left front wearing a jacket?
How long can they maintain that speed; it can't be for very long can it?
Are they all males or mixed?
Do you switch leaders or just keep the same one in the lead all the time?
What are the commands you use for go, stop, left and right?
They have to constantly listen to you for commands as they run; it must be
difficult for them.
Is it just the leader that has to hear the command? If not, what if some of
them aren't listening?
Are you are ever afraid they will run away with the sled, out of control, or
go into a ditch, with you on it?

No - it's just that her harness is a really loud red and the
cheap video camera oversaturates colors.

>How long can they maintain that speed; it can't be for very long can it?

It really depends on the dogs and the discipline. My goal
is to maintain 10mph over 20 miles. In that video they're
doing about 17mph in the first bit and then they settle down
to about 12mph towards the end (I put a bicycle computer on
the rig). Top sprint teams can hold much higher speeds but
their races are shorter.

>Are they all males or mixed?

The only male is Slick - the rest are all female.

>Do you switch leaders or just keep the same one in the lead all the time?

You can't have too many leaders, and right now my leaders
are Crow, Eclipse, and Slick, although Crow is the best of
them.

>What are the commands you use for go, stop, left and right?

"Let's go," "Whoa," "Haw," and "Gee."

>They have to constantly listen to you for commands as they run; it must be

The first order of business is not to talk to them unless
you have something to say - otherwise it's all white noise.
You'll notice they tend to keep their ears pointed at me
while they run. That's a very good thing. It's
advantageous if they all understand the commands, but it's
the leader's job to make sure that we go in the right
direction whether everybody understands or not.

>Are you are ever afraid they will run away with the sled, out of control, or
>go into a ditch, with you on it?

I worry a lot more that they'll do it without me on it.
Losing the team is really scary.

Sounds quite a lot like agility!
Morag works very well off of verbals at high speed (best example in my
videos is the "switch" towards the end of the Tunnelers course), but they
have to be loud, clear, and not buried in chit-chat or cheerleading.

I imagine that timing's pretty crucial, also, same as in agility? In that
same Tunnelers run, the "switch" fails earlier in the course because I was
not only not loud enough, I was late. I'd hate to do that with a whole bunch
of dogs pulling me on a sled! :-D
