Post subject: "types" of pit bulls
Archived from groups: alt>pets>dogs>pitbull (more info?)

I've been researching the breed for over a year now, reading about behavior,
proper training, responsibilities, etc.etc. etc. I am waiting for the right
opportunity to finally own my first pit bull. I know that I wont be able to
have this dog until I am out of college and know that I will have a rather
permanent residence. One thing I still have not been able to find a whole
lot of information on is the "types" of pit bulls. I am referring to the
coat colors and not so much the size. Correct me if I am wrong, but it
seems to me that these dogs generally come in 2 sizes, one a more stocky and
shorter size, and the other a taller and not so compact size. As for the
color, I have seen blues, reds, brindles, well hell...a whole variety of
colors. I was just hoping that perhaps you more experienced owners of this
breed can provide me with some more info about this subject. Perhaps some
pictures as well so that I can see these colors. I am curious about this
just for pickiness. This is not to say that I will ultimately base my final
decision on a particular dog on its color, but I do know that I like the
looks of some more than others. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dustin

Well...it's a huge can of worms but I'll open it. There are two "types" of
APBT generally speaking. There's the UKC reg'd APBTs that are generally
larger and heavier dogs. And there's ADBA reg'd APBTs that are generally
leaner and smaller. But both "types" cross over and you'll find smaller UKC
dog and larger ADBA dogs. Not including those monsterous ones that are 100+
lbs. You can find those in both registries too.

First I would suggest figuring out what exactly you want to do with your dog
and where. UKC has multiple options for competition...ADBA has weight pull
and conformation.

If you just want your dog as a pet, I sincerely suggest a rescue. Rescues
come in all shapes, sizes, mixes and colours....but most of all, they are in
desparate need of a good permanent responsible home and are usually up to
date on shots, fixed, chipped and trained in some cases.

As for colours....NEVER pick a dog/pup based on colour. And NEVER buy a dog
from someone who specifically breeds for colour....or size for that matter!
Sure we all have our favourite colours...but picking certain colours can
also come with some other health issues.

I heard or read somewhere that white colored dogs are prone to eye and ear
problems.
Many Dalmations have similar problems.
Can someone confirm this?

Deafness is definitely a problem as are skin issues. Sun burning is also a
problem. Solid white dogs regardless of breed are considered genetically
unsound. I just saw a gorgeous white Doberman last month...absolutely
beautiful dog...but eerily weird at the same time. So far, the owner claims
no problems....but he's also planning on breeding it EEEK!!

I am not sure if this applies to all white dogs, but when I was volunteering
at the local SPCA about a year ago, there was a white pitbull named snowball
who was diagnosed as deaf. He was pretty young at the time, too (I think he
was like around 6 months old or so...) Almost all the dog in the kennel were
barking and making a lot of noise as people walked by, but snowball just
slept on his bed no matter how loud the kennel was... Even when we tried to
take him out for a walk and called his name, he didn't even wake up (or we
didn't get any of his attention if he was not facing to us...). So, from
this experience, it might be true that white dog are most likely to be
deaf....

Yes I can confirm this, and add skin problems and cancer too.
I am not sure if this is true for all breeds but be careful
with white dogs.
