I feel very protective with hammie... I never let him sit on my shoulder or
the top of my cushy chair, or on a table in fear that he will just jump off
and hurt himself... so will he jump ??

He might. They don't know what's best for themselves. You have to watch
out for them. They seem like daredevils. Like they have a death wish. One
of ours killed himself. My boy left the cage open. We found his carcass a
couple of days later.

Hi there,

Yes you are right not to take chances, they can and do jump if scared. Its
a defence mechanism they do a huge backflip. Unfortunately they can get
badly injured depending on what they land on. I dont think they are great
judges of distance either. It seems for a hamster the only way down is the
quick way!

One of mine broke her hip when a door slammed just as my son was lifting her
out and she jumped. The vet couldnt do much other than an antibiotic and
steroid shot. She did heal well with physio amazingly and was back running
within a few weeks. She lived to a normal old age.
