Last night when I took Atty out to do business, I saw her lift her back leg
to potty - after I got over the shock of her pottying like a boy <G> - I saw
her shake her back leg and not want to put it down on the snow. Some
investigating when we came in showed up that she tore off the top of her
"pinky" (for lack of a better term - last nail on outside) nail on her back
foot. It was definitely down into the quick, poor baby... and somewhat
bloody. Not sure exactly when she did this, or how - playing, chewing? She
was playing fine at playday in the afternoon, and showed no favoritism to it
until it hit the snow at 10 pm. Today, she was chasing a toy on the carpet
and must have re-aggrivated it, as she stopped mid stream and wouldn't put
any weight on her paw, held it up like she had a burr in it... I looked at
it, it seemed red again and a little bloody. Last night I put some
antibiotic cream on it when we went to bed and she didn't bother it at all
during the night. It has a couple of torn "hangnails" that she won't let me
touch to cut off.

We're headed to the vet tomorrow anyway for an accupuncture treatment, so I
plan on having her take a look at it, but I just wanted to know if anybody
knew what I could put on it to help in the mean time. I even toyed with the
bandaid thought, but figured she would eat it off!

I would try to cut off the hangnail pieces, my female has done this a
couple times (once a dew claw and pretty ugly)
if you don't have someone who can help you hold her try placing something
(a stocking cap worked for me) over her head (like peek -a- boo) it sounds a
little mean but my dog took it a lot better than if I would have tried to
muzzle her, and I had to cut the nail off as it was hanging there and kept
catching on stuff... As long as it doesn't catch and it is a clean break she
should be fine.
Good luck, Michelle
