Hello all,
On Saturday April 3, 2004, I made the mistake of walking out of the
house with Guai-guai (pronunciation: rhymes with "my eye"), my pet
cockatiel of two and a half years, on my shoulder. His wings hadn't
been clipped for almost five months. Needless to say, he put his
ability for full flight into use and I have now been without my
feathered friend for almost a week.
I've been told to look for him up in trees and below bushes, and to
call out for him, especially around dawn and dusk (which is when birds
are most active).
I'm asking for tips from anyone has had experience finding lost pets,
especially of the feathered variety.
For those interested in my geographical details, I live in the city of
Vancouver, BC, near the corner of 33rd Ave and Oak Street. I've
already placed ads in the Courier (a free newspaper which is delivered
to almost all residences in Vancouver), put up fliers with colour
pictures of Guai-guai and dropped of fliers at Van Dusen Gardens, the
Macmillan Bloedel conservatory and the Night Owl Bird Hospital.
I've covered a fairly large area near our home, but I'm wondering if,
other than through just plain luck, there might be some other things
that I can do to increase my chances of finding him?
Thanks,
Will >> Stay informed about: Asking for tips on finding a lost cockatiel |

Sorry to hear about your bird, Will.
I'm not sure what else you could do to find him, other than what you have
done already.
I hope you find him soon, and wish you the best of luck :-)

You could also put his cage outside with the door open, food and water in
it. If he's nearby he may find it. Some people have put their cages on the
roof of their homes in case they're afraid to come down. Good luck, I hope
you find your little friend!

Thanks to everyone for the words of encouragement and tips. Here's a
general reply and a bit more detail on my progress.
Laurie:
I placed his cage out in our back yard the Monday after he flew away.
I even took a recording I had of him chirping and left it playing from
an open window when I went off to work.
What happened next only increased my grief... I received a call from
someone who claimed they had seen a "large, dark-feathered bird that
might have looked like a hawk with a small yellow bird in its beak"
near my home. I could barely concentrate at work the rest of the
afternoon.
The caller couldn't confirm the size of the smaller bird, but there
aren't that many birds in our area with lighter coloured feathers.
I thought that if only I'd taken that morning off and stayed home, I
might have had a chance to bring Guai-guai home.
In any case, by Wednesday morning, I decided I'd keep looking for a
while longer. The caller may have been mistaken and I'd never forgive
myself if I didn't spend just a bit more time looking.
Pizza Girl:
I'm going to head over to the SPCA shelter tomorrow (closed today as
it's a stat holiday) to see if any cockatiels have been turned in. I
called Greyhaven Bird Sanctuary, but they are currently closed to
protect their birds from the avian flu. If Guai-guai was taken there
before the 7th, they may have accepted him there.

Will,
Could it be that someone gave you a false report as a laugh? There are
plenty of people out there who really do not like animals and have a sick
and twisted sense of humor about these things. Are there a lot of hawks
flying around Vancouver?
Don't give up and good luck.

Thanks.
At first I hoped it was either a false report or maybe just a false
sighting. But yellow-feathered birds that are similar in size to
cockatiels aren't very common around here. When I asked around about
the likelihood of a cockatiel being attacked by predatory birds in the
area, most of the vets and bird conservatory folks here simply said
that the best thing I could do is hope that my bird is savvy enough to
avoid such dangers.
The caller didn't seem malicious; they called back to ask if I had
found my bird. I asked them how sure they were of what they saw and
they said they could have been mistaken.
I'm starting to think that they did indeed see Guai-guai. I lost him
on Saturday the 3rd. The day after, I wandered around the
neighbourhood looking for him, but it wasn't until the morning on
Monday the 5th that I set his cage outdoors and started playing the
tape. I received the call about two hours after I had gone to work so
it's possible that Guai-guai heard the chirping and somehow managed to
find his way home.
I miss him dearly and I want him home, but I've become far too
exhausted the last few days to be able to keep this up for much
longer.

Hi
So sorry for your loss. There is a site online called www.birdhotline.com
they have a posting place for found and lost birds
also make sure to call ALL vets in your area and surrounding areas My
neighbors bird went from one area to two counties away They can get around
Believe me I am Still shocked she managed to get him back as it had been a
month and a half and she had not bothered to call that area as it was a good
ways a lady at a rescue happened to get the call and when the band number
matched she called and the lady who had JUST adopted another bird now had
her other back :0)
So please do not give up One never knows.
I wish you much luck
Just post all over and send out flyers to all vets and shelters and rescues
in several areas check the MANY lost and found boards on line Also make sure
to call and check back at many of the places as they get really busy at
times and do not have time to call or it gets lost etc.
MANY Blessings
Tara
