Archived from groups: alt>pets>rabbits (more info?)

I haven't been around here much in the past year or so. After losing
three in a year it was difficult for me to be around the often sad news.
I've stuck with the two buns that I have had and they are both doing
great. I haven't had the heart to add anyone else.

Today I met a beautiful French lop girl who is in need of a home after
being surrendered because her owner could no longer care for her. She's
all black (which seems to be not the easiet to home) with a docile
personality but isn't afriad to put another animal in it's place.

She's four and un-spayed. Cancer is my big concern about opening my
heart to her. What are the odds?

If I do decide to open my heart and home to her I will get her spayed.
Would this be best to do as soon as Dr. Jeff can see her, which is
usually within 5 days for non emergancies? Or would it be better to
give her some time to adjust before putting her through the stress of
surgery?

I do appreciate it Carrie. It is a decision that will require a lot of
thought on my part and I am more than happy to hear the pros and cons.
I'll also try to find out if she is a true French Lop. Try to figure
out what I am able to deal with, and talk to Dr. Jeff about his
experience with his French Lop girl patients.

What you say about Frenchies echos how I feel about Jersey Wollies.
Wonderful, wonderful bunnies but IME the genetics stink, both that I've
had went to the bridge due to congenital defects at a year or less of
age. The heartbreak is so painful.

Jessica, when we brought Mathilda in to the fold years ago, we chose to
have the surgery within the first week. She did fine through it all, in
fact it was hard to keep her still because she was so happy to be out of
the Humane Society cage!

You might want to talk it over with the vet, too.

That's great that you're thinking of adding to the family.

We got Libby when she was 6 years old and we had her spayed and she did fine
with it. She was alittle slower than my younger girls were at coming around
but thats it.

I lost 3 rabbits in a 10 month span so I know how devastating that is.

As for her breed and age I wouldn't worry too much about it. You never know
how long they will be with us. Jasmine has been sick since they day we
brought her home and she is now almost 6 years old. We never thought she
would outlive Chloe and Rocky but she did. There is just no way to know how
long they will be with us.

Hi, Jess. I love those big black or white rabbits. A little
encouragement -- most rabbits at four don't have uterine cancer and
they are still young enough to handle a spay by a good vet. I wouldn't
let that concern stop you from bring our French lady home.

Frenches do seem to have problems with health. But then, my three
backyard mutt rabbits (Toofer, Jessie, and Quark) have had their
shares of health problems. It is hard to know what issues a rabbit has
until we are faced with the problem.

If I was considering health, I would probably always bring home
Netherland dwarfs. They seem to be, in general, the healthiest breed
of rabbit. Of course, individuals may still have problems.

If I was following my heart, I would probably just grab the rabbit
that grabbed my heart and bring him/her home. If black Frenchie
grabbed your heart, she is probably the best rabbit for you. Frenchies
make wonderful house friends. I wouldn't worry about her passing,
since all rabbits have shorter lifespans than we do. We will most
likely say good-bye to several in our lifetimes. The best we can do is
to give them a good home and hope that the vet bills aren't *too* high
if they become ill.

BTW, if black Frenchie is four years old, it is a good sign of good
genes. Many unhealthy rabbits die in the first three years of life,
apparently. Frenchie had enough health to make it past the problem
years. This is encouraging to me.
