Archived from groups: alt>pets>rabbits (more info?)

Hi everybody. :)
My first post, and also my first time taking care of a netherland
dwarf rabbit.

So one day my college professor cancelled class, so I decided to drive
around town. I decided to stop by this pet store I had been meaning
to go inside of. Low and behold, I spotted 5 very very adorable
netherland dwarf rabbits. I was fascinated with one in particular,
whose round head with seemingly no neck resting upon its perfect tiny
pudgy body was too adorable for words.

Later that day I told my girlfriend about how this pet store carries
dwarf rabbits. Turns out she loves dwarf rabbits, but has never
mentioned it to me because where we live dwarf rabbits aren't common
at pet stores. (she's crazy about cats... a little TOO crazy if you
ask me, haha, just kidding:)

So anyway, we went to PetsMart to buy a complete rabbit starters kit.
Then we went to the other pet store and bought Jackie. We named it
Jackie because it's a good unisex name we thought (the store didn't
identify for us whether it was male or female -- when we asked the
employee said she didn't know).

This was yesterday. Jackie is now in her (let's pretend it IS a she)
cage. She's very timid and seems like all she does is sit quietly in
her litter box. Occasionally she roams around to eat timothy hay or
drink the water. But she seems a little too timid. My girlfriend
claims it's just the adjustment period, but is it natural for a dwarf
bunny to NOT take food from your hands? My GF held some pelllets the
starter kit gave us in her hand, and Jackie wouldn't take it. Is it
that the trust is not there yet?

We took her out of her cage last night to roam around the room. My,
it was very active in that setting. She marked her corners and ran
around the room several times. Very cute.

But once back in the cage, she's back to the litterbox sitting and
just... being. I've heard of dwarf bunnies who were high strung, or
laid back, or playful, or territorial, the list goes on. I just hope
Jackie turns out to be a loving and playful little bunny. She has
hopped around one time in her cage, she did this for about 5 minutes.
It was very encouraging to see, but she hasn't done it again since.

Also, we are stopping by the same pet store where we bought Jackie,
tomorrow, so that we may *POSSIBLY* purchase another dwarf rabbit,
since the cage is sufficient enough to support two, and we don't want
Jackie to be lonely on those occasional nights where neither one of us
will have much time to play with her. (i.e. exams, homework, other
real life problems, etc.)

Any words of wisdom, stories, thoughts, suggestions, tips, etc. is
fully welcomed. Me and my girlfriend look forward to your
response(s). Thanks in advance!

I'm glad you're happy with Jackie (and your girlfriend!) but would
discourage you from buying any more rabbits from a shop until you check
for unwanted buns at shelters or rescues in your area.

Buying from the shops only encourages breeders, and there are enough
unwanted rabbits that breeders do not need to be encouraged.

Lecture over, welcome to APR!

I'm glad that everything is going well. Rabbits are certainly cute.
They make me happy just looking at them.

Have you checked out www.rabbit.org and www.carrotcafe.com . The
sites have very good information. I found them very helpful when I
first got rabbits.

One thing that you wrote concerned me. Rabbits have been the most
expensive pets I've ever had. Their health care is very expensive.
It is probably a good idea to be saving some money for vet care if
they need it. Netherland dwarfs are usually hardy rabbits, but it is
good to have money set back, just in case.

Dwarf rabbits often mature at 3 months, so you may want to consider
separating them very soon until they can be spayed or neutered.
Having them spayed or neutered can prevent unwanted pregnancy,
fighting, hormonal behaviors such as spraying, and reproductive
cancers that are common in females.

Enjoy your new buddies. Rabbits are wonderful. If you haven't gone
to the site, please read www.rabbit.org . It is like Rabbits101.
