Post subject: Dog throwing up yellow bile
Archived from groups: rec>pets>dogs>health (more info?)

hi -

i am new to this group, but the reason that I am writing is because my
rescue dog is frequently throwing up yellow bile. Three months ago I
rescued a German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix (city stray) and when I
first got him he had serious itching/biting - I figured allergies. My
regular vet put him on what ended up being 2 rounds of Triacimaolone (a
form of steroid) until the weather changed (we live in MD) to see if he
was having seasonal allergies. The drugs worked, but as he came off the
last round he started throwing up yellow bile all of the time. For the
first couple weeks it always happened two times, one right after the
other and its always been yellow bile. Now its only happening once at a
time. I have had bloodwork run and he is currently on Hills Z/D
(allergen-free food). 2 weeks ago I took him to the allergist thinking
the throwing up might be allergy related (he has started itching again
and has mucous in his eyes) but the allergist referred us to an
internist. The internist did a thorough exam and did an ultra sound and
found nothing. I've done lots of research on the net and did stumble
across something where people feed their dogs at bedtime to keep the
dog's gastric juices from causing nauseas. Last night was the first
night I have tried and he did not throw up this morning, but that does
not necessarily put us in the clear - he doesn't always do it everyday.
And although a good majority of the time he throws up in the morning,
that's not always when he does it. Like yesterday, he threw up in the
afternoon. The internist wants me to get him scoped and I've scheduled
it for Thursday. I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing and
that the scope is a worth while procedure or if someone else out there
has a dog who's been doing the same - I'm just very afraid they are
going to scope him and find nothing. I have seen 2 instances now where
a dog has had skin irritation and throwing up and maybe there is a
relationship between the two. ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Jenn

Jessica -

What kind of food is your dog on now? I had started him on Nutro
Natural Choice. Then when I realized that the itching was more than
just dry skin, I switched him to Solid Gold Hunden-Flocken - a more
natural food w/ minimal allergens in it in case he had food allergies.
It was while he was on that food that he came off the steroids and
started throwing up. So we changed his food yet again to the Hills z/d
in case the throwing up was allergy related. He's also been off the
steroids for a month now, so I'm not sure at this point it could still
be a reaction to that? We tried giving him Benadryl for his allergies
(well it was a generic antihistamine Equate, recommended by my vet) and
they didn't do a thing for him. The only thing that helped was the
steroids. I have been strongly thinking about adding a fatty acids
supplement, but wanted to wait until the throwing up ceased before
doing anything else to his diet, at this time he only gets his food.
Thanks so much for your response, I appreciate it!

Jenn

Well he's 75 lbs, so he'd been getting 3c in the AM and 3c in the PM,
somewhere between 4pm - 5pm. What I started doing yesterday was split
it into thirds, 2c AM, 2c PM, and 2c when we go to bed.

Jenn,

Dunno about the puking, but I HIGHLY recc. you go to a health food
store and pick up a bottle (make sure it's refrigerated) of flaxseed
oil for the scratching.

My girl (shephard/bordie collie mix) went through months of pain (would
scratch herself constantly, then those became infected, vet would put
her on prednizone and whatever antibiotic/anthistamine of the
week)..... no help. Allergy tests all negative. Later on she started
developing ear infections about every 3 months, I suspect, but have no
way to back it up - from all the various meds the vet had her on.

I spent somewhere around 2K looking for a fix, and the doc(s) were
always more than hapy to take my money. If I remember their standard
line was "she has an allergy, and we simply have to keep trying
different meds until we find the right one for her." The only thing
that came out of all of it was she got very adept at removing the
peanut butter, cheese, etc from the pills themselves before swallowing.

1 teaspoon of flaxseed oil a day cured her virtually from the first
dose. Seriously.... I mean after that first teaspoon, she hopped up on
the couch, and slept for 8 hours more deeply than I had ever seen
before.

Eventually I was able to lower it to every other day, and then weekly.
The stuff is supposed to be good for humans too..... although I tried a
teaspoon of it and almost puked. But she loved it straight from a
spoon, but wouldn't eat it if I mixed it with food.

I've preached about it here before..... in the past, I always thought
the homeopathic stuff was nonsense, and the vet knew best. I don't
think that way any longer...........

Best of luck!

Thanks Matt! I think I will go and do that. I had planned to wait until
the puking was cured to try it, but he's bloodying himself up again.
Was your dog itching all year round or just during the winter time?
also, what brand of flax seed oil do you use? Thanks again for all of
your help, it is GREATLY appreciated!!!

Jenn -

She was a year round scratcher. I don't remember the brand, (she passed
some time back from bloat) but as I recall there was only 1 brand to
choose from. I guess the only advice I can offer is that if they have
many brands, go for the most expensive.... if I recall, the bottle I
got was about $25 - $30.

Good luck !

Matt -

I'm sorry to hear that. I will get the flax seed oil tonight and I will
post back so others know if it worked or not. It is very expensive to
diagnose allergies as I am quickly finding out and if this works, it
would be a miracle! Thanks again for all of your help!

Mine developed a skin condition that caused her coat to fall out, skin to
turn scaly and fall off and her entire body to be 24/7 itchy. She has some
moles from age and would scratch her back on the concrete and break the
moles open. Nothing helped until I started using an Omega 6 Salmon Oil
liquid supplement. 1.5 squirts per day in her food and the results have
been AMAZING and instantaneous. Since she's been on the supplement her hair
hasn't fallen out, the itchiness is all but gone, no more scratching on
concrete & no more scaly skin flaking off.

My dog did this for a while and we switched dog foods and she hasn't done it
since. She did it mostly in the morning, but there were a few times she'd do
it during other times of the day. Some dogs just have a sensitive stomach,
and she may also be reacting somewhat to coming off the steroids. Also, you
can give a dog Benadryl for allergies. If you do and this tones down the
symptoms she's having, then you will know it is indeed allergies.

As for the itching, have you tried adding supplements to her diet? Omega-3
Fatty Acids are wonderul for dry skin. My girl has eczema and it hasn't
bothered her for years because of the supplements. I also add instant cooked
oatmeal and some canned salmon to her food daily, and it helps tremendously.
Since your dog has allergies though I would consult with the vet on adding
food. But the supplements won't hurt one bit. You can get it at most pet
supply stores at reasonable prices.

Giving the dog a snack at bedtime has "fixed" the yellow bile
problem the great majority of times this question has come
up. You don't have to feed the entire evening meal right before
bedtime, just reserve a portion of it or give your dog a biscuit
before bedtime.

How often do you feed him?

That'll probably work. I asked how often he was fed because
there are a lot of people who feed only once per day.

try putting him on a natural human diet, raw chicken, ground turkey, blended
raw broccli, wheat germ, and good vitamins like GARLIC pills, cod liver oil,
flax oil, vitamin e, b complex, a, 1/4 tablet of selenium and contact me
more if your interested, i have a vitamin list that i did alot research on.
Skip all teh doctors drugs, and doctors treatment and see if that works.
apparently you have some kind of allergy(oops thinking like a dog again,
your dog that is), and it may even be to something in your home, but you
will find out if you elimminate dog food crud completely form the diet.
give it only filtered water too incase there is something in the water like
arsenic, flouride, or other heavy metals or toxins that the dog may be
allergic to. When on that diet for atleast month the dogs immune system
should be strong enough combat anything. then if you simply cant afford the
diet, go back to regular beef pedigree and supplement with the all above
mention regularly.... If the symptoms come back, then keep it on the diet
and thats the price you pay for having a healthy animal.
