What kind of personality/temperment is typical of pomeranians? I know dogs
within any breed differ and that disposition can be influenced by the
owners, but most breeds have some tendencies that are characteristic. I
have primarily had keeshonden and they were all wonderful dogs. My last dog
died last October and I am looking at getting a different breed this time.
I would like to get a smaller breed. However, many of the smaller breeds
seem to be more excitable and I want a dog that has sweet, fairly calm
disposition. In a book on various breeds I read Pomeranians tend to be
"snappish",
can be aggressive with other animals. (we have a cat, by the way) and bark
a lot. Have those of you with pomeranians found this to be true?
Pomeranians are so beautiful and apparently they are somewhat related to the
keeshond, or so I have heard. Would you share your experiences with the
personality/temperment of pomeranians? Thnk you.

I am sorry about your dog. I have not seen anyone of my friends in
my close local circle with a calm Pom. They are all a little
excitable and bark. None of us have snappy Poms though. My best
friend is a breeder and her pups are socialized from day one. My Pom
gets along with cats although she chases one of my eight cats and I
think it's cause that one will run from her, the others just roll
over and look at her like she is nuts. She sleeps in the car on
trips and goes with me everywhere. She demands much attention
however when I first get home from work.

I have a fairly younger pom and he's quite excitable as well. I socialize
him a lot with other dogs ( I have a doberman and a malti-poodle as well)
and find he can be snappy sometimes with the larger dogs and with puppies.
He also tends to bark a lot at children, until he gets to know them. He's
very affectionate though and sleeps right beside my head. And I can carry
him around anywhere that I go. All in all the bit of barking (which he's
starting not to do as much:) is definately worth all the kisses that I get
at the end of the day.

We have three currently. They are super protective and bark when they
feel thereatened but not really any other time. They attach themselves
to someone and love to snuggle. They have an attitude, what we call
Pomitude. You'll know it when you see it!

My Pop is still a pup at six months. We also have a cat. The pup wants
to try to play with this full grown feline and has been swatted for his
playfulness. So you see, in this case, the POM is friendly as can be
but the cat is not so much. Both are males. He is just starting to lose
the first set of teeth and has been using his pigs ears to chew on. He
LOVES to run and fetch... He loves us like crazy.

We would like to find the answer to potty training/ some days are better
than others. It is during these times I am reminded that cats rule and
dogs drool...the voice of the flying nun in my head.

I have a male 17 month old. He is the most affectionate dog I have
ever owned including a Golden Retireiver and a lovable mutt. He is
super intelligent and great with my 8 yr. old who is constantly
bugging him. He has never once growled or shown his teeth.

I too have read where Poms can be temperamental and snappish
especially with children.

I guess I got very lucky.
