Hello

I like to swim in the sea, is it OK for my 1 year old Colly/lurcher dog
to join me. Yesterday I took him to to the sea, I walked out to about
my middle and he swam for his second time. He seemed to love it but at
the same time he seemed unsure. When ever I went back in he followed
but saying that he would follow me in to a fire.

What's the situation with dogs in the sea, is it safe fo them?

Darren

When I lived on the left coast, my dog swam in the ocean every
weekend. If you live in an area with fleas, I think the salt
water works as a preventative.

Hello, thanks for that. If the weather is nice I'll take he to the
beach again at the weekend. At least he'll not get any more grass seed
infection.

Thanks Darren

Dogs do love swimming in the sea.

However remember they are only dogs and as such can not always
anticipate problems; so you have to think for them and ensure they come
to no harm. They can be swept out in the ocean currents and lost. Also
they can get tired without even realising it themselves.

I don't think salt water will harm a dog. It may actually help them,
although I am not sure. However the salt (combined with sun and fresh
air) will make a dog very thirsty; so if you take a little bottle of
fresh drinking water to the beach and let him drink afterwards, that
will help a lot.

What sort of dog do you have? Long haired dogs are not so good in water
as their short haired cousins. Also, greyhounds and whippets are badly
affected by the cold.
