the wheel I have, (well that my hamster has!) rattles and vibrates and is
very very loud.. I sometimes have to take it out of his tank because it's
just so noisy at night, but I feel bad cause he obviously loves playing in
it.

Anyone have a suggestion of where I can buy (preferably online) a nice quiet
hamster wheel that stands on it's own? i.e not one that hooks onto a wire
cage.
thanks!

ps I've tried oiling it, it's not made it any better.

Wodent wheel = good.

www.transoniq.com - their website will give you a list of suppliers, it's
free standing and pretty quiet. Bear in mind its size when making a
purchase, though, it's 8 inches in diameter and won't fit in a lot of cages
because of this.

I'm not sure what kind of wheel you have now, but I have a few different
ones, and out of those I think the comfort wheel is the most quiet. I put
a little oil on it which I think also makes it spin a little better, and
you can still hear it a little but it's not something that would bug you.

I have to second the rec's for the Wodent Wheel. The size can be an
issue - I actually bought a cage to fit the wheel... Our Bert can
occasionally get the wheel rocking if he goes at it very fast - the
wheel is generally quiet otherwise. I have a large stone in the cage
that I wedge in near the wheel base and this prevents the rocking
sound. The stone doubles as a nail file for Bert. He loves his stone
- I cannot take it out without him getting ticked.

Oiling works well. I have a little bottle that I use each time I
clean the cage/wheel. I can't use olive oil - Bert licks it off but I
do find Crisco works fine and he does not eat that. I have not used
household oils or anything like WD-40. Sometimes the wodent will get
noisy if it gets appreciably dirty around the screw housing. This is
easily remedied with a cleaning and the wheel comes apart easily for
this purpose. I have a toothbrush dedicated to wheel cleaning which
works great.

Good luck
