Hi folks,
This is my 1st post t the group and I don't know if I'm in the right place,
maybe you can tell me if one of the other groups might be more up this
issues "alley". I've got a 11 year old dog who's just recently starting to
show a little slowing down for her age. One of my biggest concerns is my
wife had to have Pergo flooring put in and the poor dog's got absolutely no
traction on the stuff. No matter how short we get her nails, she's always
slipping or sliding around on this stuff, and at her age I'm really worried
about her getting seriously hurt.
She's a Aussie shep/Lab mix but has more of the Lab body shape. Her
weight's been kept an eye on, since we knew she'd be getting up in years
and start slowing down and showing her age. She's got no other physical
ailments and is in pretty good health, but I cringe everytime she goes
sliding across that slippery floor. I'm pretty fond of the wife too, so I
guess I'm stuck with the Pergo, but does anybody have a similar situation
and what could be done to keep her more stable? Doggie sneakers crossed my
mind but I think they'd be a new chew toy before too long.
Anyone got some ideas?

TIA--old goat

We have the same problem with our 13 yo bearded collie mix who has Lymphoma
and arthritis. We had Pergo put in the upstairs and once she reaches the top
of the stairs she splays out or falls sideways on her hips. So I got a few
long tight weave rugs with traction on the back from Wal-Mart. Found them in
the rug section. Like short runners. Put them end to end where she has her
route to and from the ebdrooms. Problem solved.

Something I've heard that's worked for dogs who had fears of slick floors is
the constructive & liberal use of area rugs. If your wife isn't opposed, an
area rug near the sitting area (or anchoring the area) and a few smaller
rugs that make a trail of sorts for the dog to navigate the larger spaces.

"Paw wax" helped my oldster on my slippery floors, especially
with a couple of young dogs running around.
