I almost hate to ask questions the way I was treated recently... but here
goes. When the weather is nice, and when its time to change the rabbits
litter I put on him a thing I bought at petco. Its a bunny leash. I put it
on him and then put the end-loop over a fixed pole. Then he can eat grass
to his hearts content and just lounge around on the grass after his initial
exploration. Its not in direct sunlight, were totally organic so no worries
about lawn chemicals, but is this something I shouldnt be doing? The leash
has one loop that goes around his neck and another that goes around his
upper belly. (up by his front legs) He seems to have accepted it from day
one. I do keep an eye on him in case he decides to chew on his leash.
(which hes never done)

But am I missing something? btw, you cant walk a rabbit with a bunny leash.
They prefer to go their own direction. Which is always the opposite
direction a human would want to go.

What's the brand name? I've tried a couple on my two, but they get out
of them with little effort.

There are some things to consider, such as the possibility of the
bunny picking up ticks or other such undesireables.

Another is that, depending on the temperature, it might not be a bad
thing for the rabbit to get some direct sunlight, which would help
them manufacture vitamin D.

There are a couple web pages that discuss house rabbits being
outdoors, but I can't find them at the moment. Anyone else here know
what I'm talking about?

Hi Rob,

I have done this with bunnies in he past but there are two safety
concerns. 1) They can't run away from a predator who gets in the yard.
2) They can get tangled and hurt themselves, worse if they get tangled
and then are upset and start thrashing while you're trying to help them
because they don't trust you. So you have to watch them. I always did it
in the yard where I could be lookking out the window watching them the
whole time as in when I did the dishes or when I was going to be working
in the garden or sitting outside anyway.

Other than that it was a great experience for mine. As for walking, well
bunnies can be taught but bunnies don't seem to enjoy following someone
else. My experience puts bunny leach training as about equalt to cat
leash training.

Oh, and all pet newsgroups contain one or two usually very vocal
know-it-alls who have a pathological need to make newbies feel like
idiots and to make everyone do things their way. There are also a few
who are just plain trolls and will make anyone who first comes here
miserable. They probably don't even own bunnies. Ignore the people who
are nasty. Take what you like from the rest and leave the rest.

In my experience most of the folks here are wonderful and nice and have
lots of great advice and such.

Anthony, APR is not the place for this. Please confine the discussion to
rabbits. Do you have one? Please share with us if you do.

I'm nervous about using a harness, other than for walking
Max. A friend had an American Checkered Giant that
accidentally hung him self. Sadly he had the rabbit 9 years

I have a nice fenced yard with plenty of potential play hiding places.
The bunnies I have now love running around in it (well not now as it is
winter), sticking mostly to the edges of the yard where there are bushes
and such to sit under. However many bunnies are agoraphobic (likely from
inherent instinct of swooping birds of prey) and I have had some bunnies
in the past that were terrified of being outdoors and hated it. I recall
in particular a gray Netherland dwarf I had before Arwen who was only
affectionate with me when outdoors and then he would jump in my lap and
try to burrow into it, he was so terrified. So you need to take that
possibility into account as well.

Yes, me too. That's why you can't leave them unattended if you do it.
Did you know the strongs vertical blinds can catch and hang pets too?
All mine are NOT knotted in circle and cut shorter.

Thats the kind of thing I was wondering about. Max has never freaked out
while being leashed to the pole, and as Im always quite close by, Im not
*too worried. But Ill always keep it in mind. The leash cant tighten like
a noose so im not too worried, as long as he doesnt hang from something.
(theres nothing nearby)

Our property is rather extensive, and while its ALL fenced in, and would be
wonderful for rabbits to spend a day just having fun, we have some plants
that are for sure poison for a rabbit. So I cant let him off his leash like
I'd like. We have too many exotic and weird plants that I just dont trust.

I had a friend who had his dog leashed to the bed of his truck. The leash
didnt extend to the rails. Even being as short as it was (the leash) it was
long enough so that the dog hung himself when he tried to jump out while he
went into a store. It wasnt a pretty sight. The poor thing lost all
control of its bodily functions and hung to death from the side of the
truck. My buddy cried for months over that. Horrifying to say the least.
Saddest story I ever heard. He had that dog for years.

Hi Rob,

I've noticed the same thing about "walking bunnies" I get to practice
sprints. :-)

Is bunny outside alone or with you? If he's alone my big concern would be
preditors, cats, dogs and birds of prey; and the possibility of the rabbit
being harmed by one of them or harming himself if startled.

Mine enjoy going outside to just lounge around and nibble grass on the
leash. I do have a leash chewer though so I have to be careful. I had
Molly outside on a leash a few summers ago when a neighbors dog roamed into
the yard. It didn't care about her but she was scared. Leaping several
feet into the air and running while towing me on the end of the leash. Not
an experience I wish to repeat, no one was harmed but we were both a bit
stressed after that event, neither she or I usually do that much running.

Im always out there with him. Im too paranoid otherwise. We have some
nasty plants that Im afraid Max would get into. (the nasty ones are
probably the ones that taste the best for all I know) So I keep him close.

Our yard is private with fencing so Im not concerned about other animals,
other than eagles and hawks I guess. Rare where Im at.

Tell us again, Rob, what is your purpose in posting to APR?

To share your happy graphic stories with us?

My purpose of joining the group is to gather information on how best to
treat my rabbit. It doesnt come with an instruction book, so Im rather
clueless. I didnt take kindly to being treated like some moronic ogre.

The point of sharing the story was to demonstrate that I fully understand
the dangers of using a leash that can lead to strangulation. Its hardly a
happy story. He had his pup for years before this happened. It devestated
him.
