Post subject: strange dots on ferret
Archived from groups: alt>pets>ferrets (more info?)

I have a wild ferret that I captured (probably an escaped/released pet),
and am quarantining it because it bit/scratched someone.

Anyway, on the back of it's head there are these 2 white spots, maybe
puss balls. See the picture:
http://aycu39.webshots.com/image/30638/2001851225955524594_rs.jpg

Can anyone tell me what they are?

And while I am at it, is there anyone near Scranton, PA who would like a
ferret?

Be sure to tell prospective adoptees that ferrets like this bite out of
fear, it is not an incorrigible habit. Who knows what hell he's been
through. Patience, TLC and lots of treats will cure fear biting. - CW

The first bite I think was an accident (it might have been a scratch).

It later bit me when I tried to put my hand in the cage and give it
water, but it didn't seem violent, but more like it was trying to get
out of the cage.

When I held it (using a glove) it didn't struggle or try to fight, it
just looked around.

However back to those dots: they are growing bigger. And they don't look
like ticks, but rather something from the ferret itself. Also I think a
tick would have fallen off by now.

If no one takes it by next week we are going to have to release it back
to the wild.

If you're trying to kill the poor thing then letting it go into the wild
will definably work.

You did a wonderful thing by taking this ferret so please don't release him
into the wild take him somewhere where he can get the care he needs.

Ferrets can not survive on their own so you should search out a Ferret
rescue and take him there or maybe even the humane society but be careful
some humane societies kill ferrets when they get them.

at least take him to animal control ( dog catcher ) ,
hopefully you have one available .
there are a lot of very good ferret people in
this group and perhaps someone can direct you
to a shelter or to ferret folks in your area .
please don't put him back in the woods .
thanks ,

Please don't put the ferret back in the woods. There is an animal
shelter right in Scranton that accepts ferrets.
SCRANTON ANIMAL SHELTER ASSN 570-961-5800
215 N 7th St
Scranton,PA 18503
Please call them & I am sure they would help you. If not call pet
stores to see if they would help or know of ferret people in your
town.My vet calls me if any ferrets are found or left.I go get them
immediately. I'm sure some nice person could be found that would love
to have the ferret.

They do look lots like ticks to me too. We had them out in the woods where
we lived when I was a teen.

If you were close to Phoenix, I'd take him but alas... Google did show,
among others, the Pennsylvania Ferret Rescue Association though, maybe
they'd be able to point you in the right direction for this poor little
fuzzy.

There are no wild ferrets - only pets who were let go or lost, so
please do not let it loose or it will surely die. I would limit your
handling of him as he is stressed and scared right now. Just make sure
that he has food and water until you can turn him over to ferret
experienced people.

These are ticks - this guy should go to a vet or you can use Frontline
Spray or Revolution to get them off him.

> And while I am at it, is there anyone near Scranton, PA who would like a

Please contact the PA Ferret Club & Shelter (www.ferretclub.com) -
they have club members in your area that could take the ferret in for
you. Please do not turn it over to Animal Control or a regular shelter
- they will likely want to put him down. I have already contacted the
PFCS so they are waiting for an email from you so they can help.

If you need to, feel free to contact me directly, as well, my home #
is 814-237-9267.

I will reply to you off list as well, but I am located in Forty Fort
and would be willing to take in the ferret. I work at a vet hospital
so can get vet care for this guy with no problem.

legit. You can reach me at bcdoxie @ epix.net (remove spaces) or you
can call 696-1146 from 2pm to 8pm tonight or 8 am to noon tomorrow.
