Post subject: strange behaviour - advice please
Archived from groups: rec>pets>dogs>behavior (more info?)

I have had my dog, a male English Setter x Collie aged 7, for about 10
months after adopting him from the Blue Cross. He settled in with me really
quickly and is happy and laid back, but normally very enthusiastic about his
walks. Until very recently he has been totally trustworthy off the lead,
although I never take any chances when within sight of a road.

On 3 or 4 separate occasions recently he has, when let off the lead, simply
turned round and run off in the direction of home. Until tonight I have
been able to call for him to stop and sit while I catch up and put him on
the lead, but this evening he hesitated, and then ran all the way home,
crossing a (fortunately not busy) road in the process. I put him on the
lead and tried to resume the walk he dug his heels in and would not move.
Although anxious I am careful not to tell him off.

I cannot think of anything that has changed recently in his environment or
routine. This behaviour actually started while we were staying with friends
away from home recently - while at a country park he suddenly made his way
back to the camper van instead of continuing a walk. However, I have taken
him away from home several times before and he has always been fine and
enjoyed himself.

Any helpful advice would be much appreciated. Any questions, please ask
and I will reply through this group.
