We have had our boy for nearly 10 months now, he was a baby when we got him
from a pet shop. For the last two months he has taken this habit up of
screaming out when we are not there to talk to him. He used to quieten down
after a few minutes, but now just screams and screams for hours on end. It
is starting to drive us both mental, and we now find we have to go out of
our home to get away from the noise. We give him lots of attention, but when
you are studying he is trying to destroy the mouse pad or the paper you are
writing on, so he can not be on you all the time. I am lost to know what I
can do, is there a way I can train him to not make so much noise. We also
live in a unit complex, so noise is not something that is eagerly tolerated.
Any tips wouls be great. Thanks in advance. >> Stay informed about: How do I stop my cockateil from screaming |

You might consider getting him a companion. He obviously wants some
company. If you don't want to go that route, does he have a mirror?
Sometimes that keeps them occupied.

No - mirriors are a bad idea for a single Tiel. They become attached to them
and you'll never get them out of the cage - trust me - this is from my own
experience. My Rougue became impossible when he had his mirror. Read some of
my earlier posts about "encouraging Tiel out of cage". The problem was the
mirror and I had to get rid of it. Since I got rid of the mirror, he comes
out of his cage with no trouble. >> Stay informed about: How do I stop my cockateil from screaming |

I stand corrected. I do know, however, that when I gave my original hen
access to a mirror away from her cage, it kept her plenty occupied. This
was only done a few times before she was joined by a second bird. I never
left a mirror in her cage, though, so I never experienced the problem you
describe. >> Stay informed about: How do I stop my cockateil from screaming |

No you haven't. Wilson is the one who needs to be corrected.

You may not have experienced the same problem even if you had put a mirror
in the birds cage and left it there. Wilson's 'tiel is only one bird and
all birds behave differently under similar circumstances.
In general mirrors are not great ideas, but that doesn't automatically place
them in the "bad idea" file.

Have you located him to another room? Try covering him for a few minutes, then
once he stops screaming, take the cover off, and tell him what a good boy he is
(now that he is quiet!). Give him cardboard to chew on; they do need beak
exercise to keep the beak from growing. I have given my cockatiel his own
cardboard box to destroy. Even cardboard egg cartons are great for the bird to
get beak exercise on.

Oh sorry - I misunderstood you. I thought we were talking mirrors inside the
cage.
I still have a mirror for him in his play area outside, but I had one inside
the cage and thats where I ran into problems.
The mirror is fine outside - though sometimes he gets attached to this as
well and won't leave it :-) >> Stay informed about: How do I stop my cockateil from screaming |

This is a somewhat controverial thing to try, but just get him a little
mirror to keep him company while you can't be there.
Some people say you shouldn't do this because if you remove the mirror they
get separation anxiety, but ours hasn't had any trouble. Partly I think
because we remove the mirror when we come home and also spend a lot of time
with him when we can. He won't give you up for the mirror 'cause the
mirror doesn't scratch his head or let him nibble on its dinner.
We tried other things like spraying him with a water bottle when he
screeched, and it worked, but we decided we wanted him to like the bottle
rather than associate it with bad behavior.
By now--he's two and a half y.o.--he's more well-adjusted in his
environment. The mirror keeps him company when we can't, and we keep him
company when he can, and he doesn't scream nearly as often as he used to.

You handed out worthless advice. I pointed out that fact so the OP would
have a clue as to what to do with the worthless advice.
Just exactly how is correcting bad advice starting a flame war?
