Archived from groups: rec>aquaria>freshwater>goldfish (more info?)

We have a 240L tank with gold fish, just your avaerage everyday gold fish.
There is one, a fan tail, that from time to time goes crazy, it comes to the
surface and then dive bombs the shingle in the bottom and skoots across the
shingle on his nose several times before screaming around the tank like a
crazy person in a rubber cell and then returns to the surface and repeats
the performance.....can go on for 2 or 3 minutes before the calm is restored
andhe swims as normal with the rest of them. It is not a regular happening.
Just wondering what is going on.

Cheers all.

could be pH of the water, could be he itches from a parasite.

If it was the ph you could try ruling it out with a handful of shellgrit in
your gravel and maybe a teaspoon of epson salt for every 20L of water, so 14
teaspoons! Changing GH isn't as risky as changing the rest of pH but it's
still best to mix it up in aquarium water and slowly add it too the water.
GH goes down over time as minerals settle out of the water, a good way of
keeping it up is regular partial water changes.
I rarely find it too be a problem in tanks I water change frequently.
It could be he itches from a parasite, or worse he may have a large internal
one messin with his head.
I'd maybe source some levamisole hydrochloride (sp?) or praziquantral (sp?)
based meds if it could be an internal.
Other wise salt baths, malachite/acriflavine treatment in hospital tank for
externals
If it is a large dominant fish it may be 'flashing' which is a sort of
showing off sort of thing.
Healthy big males can go a bit spastic at times, and a 240L tank is not
really big enuf to have a graceful date around in!
anyway, lotta ways to keep fish.
If it was me, I'd observe fins and fish for any signs of external parasites,
check for knifeback or sunken gut or black spots or gill flaps not opening
evenly for signs of internal parasite.
Then I'd give them their usual weekly water change, squeezing out the filter
sponge in a bucket of aquarium water.
As a blanket measure I'd dose the tank with geo-liquid or a handful of
eating grade bentonite clay (waters gonna go cloudy mate)
feed a light feeding of bloodworms, duckweed and some frozen peas.
next day some chopped prawn and flake
next day some chopped frozen earth worms and goldfish pellets
then brineshrimp and flake
the duckweed and cichlid pellets
then frozen home made food and an orange segment.

Your fish flashing is prob not something to worry about tho mate
keep an eye on it and if it seems happy, hungry and healthy
tis all good!
