For the last couple of days, Pepper has huddled and not eaten much. Drunk a
ton of water though, but it looks like she is having difficulty getting a
good stance in front of the water bottle. Her espresso, shiny eyes have
moments of dullness where it is like she is turned inward and there is
nothing going on but the pain, and those eyes just look so tired. Her
breathing sways her body back and forth in a tiny circle. We are still
giving her all the meds as directed, but I am wondering if for Pepper, this
has become the chemical equivalent of life support machines for a human.
She has her appointment tomorrow with the doc, and I am going to ask the
question I have been dreading for eight years - if it is time to ease her
suffering and let her go.

I had three separate crying jags today. I don't feel guilt about the
possibility of what may be done. I just wish she would stop hurting and
that I could find the magic spell to make her feel better and return her to
being the bun she was 2 weeks ago - eldery, crabby, furball machine, all of
it, exactly as she was. And I am terrified by the approaching grief and
loss. If it hurts this much to see her suffer, I can't imagine what it will
feel like when I no longer have my fuzz baby.

Time for the evening round of meds.

Monica E.

That's a sad picture you are painting of Pepper's state, Monica.

She has been through a lot.

I hope she can recover.

Perhaps some extra love and pets from you could help her gather her
strength.

Healing can be painful.

Monica,

I absolutley understand your pain. The only reason I have been on here
is to see how pepper is doing. DO NOT GIVE UP!! Maybe you should give
pepper water in a bowl. Set it right in front of her face. Cadbuy was
able to get the water better that way when he was to weak to get it for
himself. If pepper is eating anything that is better than nothing.
Cadbury ate absolutely nothing at all. Did you ask your vet about
Pedilyte. I gave Cadbury something called Rebound from the vets office.
He lapped it up even though it was chicken flavored. Yuck! Carrot
flavor seems much tastier. Whatever happens is in Gods hands. I will
pray extra hard for you and for Pepper. God Bless You and your sweet
little baby. I will pray that God guides you in the right decision.

Your in my thoughts,

Candice and the late Cadbury.

I honestly don't think you're giving up hope but rather you're beginning to
accept the inevitable. I think the hardest thing for me to do was to let my
Snowflake go.... he was 9 years old and aside from being a bit stiff and a
chronic runny eye, he seemed very healthy. it was just the pain that I
couldn't handle seeing in his eyes. one morning I went to his cage and sat
next to him, stroking his forehead and said, "Snow, I'll do anything you
wish of me.... just let me know, ok?" it wasn't long thereafter that I knew
his wish.... there's just this special connection that he and I had.... he
"told" me when he was ready to go. he was hurting, he was getting to be too
old.... he was tired.... our little alleybun knew love and he was ready to
share the love he was given. when I made that decision, in a lot of ways,
there was a sense of relief from the pain and the suffering that he felt in
his old bones..... he was sleeping peacefully.... his body sleeps eternally
but his spirit runs and binkies free as the day he learned how to! *That's*
the Snowflake that I know he's meant to be..... I think that Pepper will
give you the sign for when she's ready. just open yourself to receive that
sign.
The price we pay for unconditional love is grief when they're gone....
sometimes we need to be "empty" before we can be fulfilled again. Cuddle
that little bun and let her know how much you love her..... let her tell you
when she's ready....

Monica, please try to give Pepper some baby food through a syringe. Some
nutrition is better than none, and taste and smell for the most part can
stimulate some appetite where there was none before. I am feeling so bad for
the both of you. Ever hopeful, Carla and Claire.

Post subject: POSITIVE SURPRISE!! (was: starting to give up hope) [Login to view extended thread Info.]
Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

After tonight's meds, I noticed Pepper was -licking- the new, mixed hay and
not eating it. I thought maybe she had peed on it, so I got her a fresh
batch of the new hay. The vet had told me that the old, plain, timothy hay
was unappealing to her, so giving it to her would be "an exercise in
futility," but because I had nothing left to lose, I threw in a sprinkling
of the old hay. Well, Pepper immediately began to pick out the old hay and
chomp it. I threw in a little more, and she chomped it with greater speed.
Hurriedly, my mom and I pulled out all the new hay and threw in a good wad
of the old hay.

My frail, old bun, the bun I have been crying about for days, LEAPT ON TOP
OF THE WAD OF HAY AND BEGAN TO MOW IT DOWN. As my parents and I laughed and
cried and cheered her on, Pepper ate nearly nonstop for a good 10 minutes.
She was still eating when I came running upstairs to post the news. I am
going to check on her again in a few minutes to see how she did.

She'll get an entire bale of plain ol' timothy hay a day, if this is what it
takes. And I am returning the bag of mixed hay to the vet's office
tomorrow, with Pepper's compliments.

Deepest apologies to everyone for having posted my dramatic angst, and thank
you for understanding!!!!!

Monica E. (and Pepper)

Oh Monica ... that's the most wonderful news. I think that sometimes we bunny
parents know our Buns even better than a well intentioned doctor. I'm so glad
you gave in to a "gut feeling" and gave Pepper the hay she has always loved. I
feel that this is truly a turning point for her, she didn't want her diet
changed :-) ... Keep up the good work Pepper. Hugs to you Monica and many
prayers for your sweet girl ... Keep us posted, we're sure pulling for her.

Pepper is giving you a big, huge sign. Yeah! She wants to keep trying,
the stinker.

Hope she's completely back to normal soon.

I know how you are feeling. I have been through what you are going through
with two rabbits this summer -- one with a good outcome and one with a bad
outcome. The rabbits were tired; I was tired; and I didn't think that there
was much hope with the pain they were feeling.

Pepper will let you know when it is time to go. To me it seems like a
rabbit's hold on life is so fragile. It is almost like their spirits are
floating a little outside their bodies. When they are sick, their spirits
seem to shrink in to deal with the pain, so they seem lost to us.

For right now, I urge you to give Pepper a chance. She will let you know
when it becomes too bad. I know you are tired, but I hope you can hold on
another day or so until Pepper and you are sure that it is time to cross the
bridge. She may not be lost right now. She may just be dealing with the
pain and discomfort and medications by pulling in.

((((Monica and Pepper))))

YeeHaa! Hugs and even bigger hugs for Pepper. Please don't worry about the
other post. Most of us understand completely.

I hope that this is the turnaround, and that you can get some well-earned
rest.

Hang in there Pepper! Sometimes rabbits just don't want a change of hay! Even
if the new stuff is "less boring", they don't care.
