My male budgie he's 7 yrs and as of late (the last 1yr and a half) he has
been driving me crazy with his squawking. He never used to squawk at all. We
moved around 2 years ago and it started soon after. It is getting
progressively worse. He gets out of his cage regularly but it doesnt seem he
likes to fly or spend time with me as much as he used to. Otherwise he seems
as healthy as ever.
Is this normal? Could he be suffering from something like depression ?

It isn't called "squawking", it's called 'chirping'. It's what budgies
do when they are happy and healthy. If you budgie didn't do it before
perhaps it was unhappy. No bird is silent and no bird owner should
expect their bird to *be* silent. If you cannot enjoy the little chap's
happy sounds, perhaps it is time for you to find him a new home with
someone who has realistic expectations about owning a bird?

If the bird is making an unsually loud frequent noise it may be because he
is trying to figure out where everyone is. The loud monotone chirps, in my
experience, usually mean, "Here I am. Where are you?". He may be doing
this because he doesn't see anyone nearby. He may also be doing this as an
answer wild birds chirping he now hears.

of sound scratchy? Mine doesn't do those all that often except when
stressed. Otherwise, it's either the "cheep cheep" sounds or his whistling
and other noises.

No. I think the scratchy ones you're thinking of are distress calls.

If He's on an all seed diet, he could be unhealthy....
If his behaviour has changed, (used to come outside, and now prefers you
leave him alone) or if he has an "attachment" ;-) to one of his toys, or
something similar to that, he could be a bit hormonal.

I'll get him to an avian vet ASAP for a checkup.

With my budgie Boyd, "Squawking" is a fear response, (like when I or the Vet
has to grab a hold of him to crop worm, or give him some medicine)
As another respondant said, loud "Chirps" (usually just one, but ear
piercing) is a "Where are you??" sound.

We found he would make these sounds when we put his favourite toy away, or
if we had been home most of the day and left the house for a few minutes.

Thanks Charles
It sounds as though your right.
There are less people around now then he has been used to.He also does here
plenty more wild birds calls now then he ever did before at the old place..
So on nice days now i put him on my balcony where he can see other birds
and he's happy as a pig in s**t.
thanks
