I need help with this one! My female has slight hair thinning on her back
between the shoulders and the hind legs in several spots. In those spots
she has lines like that of a razor of which some are splitting. There is
very little bleeding-no sticky weeping-and no other signs of dry skin.

She eats Nutro Ultra and has eaten Nutro since 3 mos., she is over 1 year
now. Once a week she has an egg and has for the last 6 mos. with no signs
of skin problems until now. She was spayed at 6 months with no problems.
She likes to lay around in the pine mulch and has for several weeks/month
with no signs of distress on her belly.

We also have a male from the same litter with all the same habits/conditions
showing no signs of this problem at all. The only differences between the
two other than male/female are she is black with very light skin and he is
blonde with dark brown skin. She is about 30+ lbs. more than the male.

We bathed them with a shampoo for sensitive skin from our vet on saturday
and sunday her splits were much worse.

What am I doing wrong and what can I do to reverse this skin condition?

Thanks for all tips/advice.

Have you had the thyroid level checked? I sort of suspect a fungus, but
that's just a hunch. I might try using some Gold Bond powder on one of the
areas to see if it helps.

I talked with my breeder and think we may have the problem narrowed down.
It may be a combination of sunburn and girth problems. For about a month
now we have had our patio furniture out and the two dogs love to chase each
other around the yard and the male dives under the chairs for cover. The
female being about 30 lbs. hevier than the male does not quite fit under
with ease - she tends to get stuck or whack her back against the under rail
of the chairs. She also runs through the doggie door after her buddie and
with the combo of all these she may be getting chafed and cut.

With the onset of summer weather she sits out in the sun often and this may
be causing dry skin. I am not sure if this is the cause but it is a good
possibility.
