Archived from groups: alt>pets>dogs>labrador (more info?)

I've got Erwin fairly well trained.

In the morning, he goes outside to pee, and then he goes to fetch the
newspaper from the bottom of our long driveway. Unfortunately it is then at
this moment that he decides that 'ooops now I have to poop', and he charges
off in to the municipal reserve land to do his business there (he likes a
bit of privacy when he poops, and the tall grass in the munical land is
ideal for him).

Now this presents a few difficulties, mostly when he does this, he goes out
of sight on the other side of a hill, so its tough to tell if he's 'on task'
or not (and to time my call for him to come back appropriately). I also
can't see if he's actually 'done' anything there or not, or if he's just
gone for a little sniff break (I've followed him up the drive several times,
I always see him pooping when I get to the top fast enough), *but* there are
all kinds of nice things to sniff out there, but sometimes he does get
distracted after he poops, and needs a little encouragement to come back.
Another problem is he shouldn't really be leaving poop in the municipal
land, I do go and pick it up when I 'do my rounds', but I worry I've still
left a few out there.

Anyways, it would be far easier if I could get him to pee, poop, and *then*
go get the newspaper. I've tried bringing him out on his leash, and waiting
him out, but invariably when I do that, he hasn't thought to go (he'll pee
quick enough but he'll wait to poop forever). I've tried taking him around
his other poop spots, but its like he's telling me 'don't you know the
routing is pee, newspaper *then* poop... silly human".

Anyways was wondering if anyone here has any suggestions as to what I might
try next.

Dale

Want him to poop earlier? Make his feeding schedule earlier. Remember: early
in , early out...............let us know.

This is poop from supper at 5pm the night before being produced in the
morning.

Its ready to come out, he just doesn't think about it until after he's run
to the bottom of the driveway to get the newspaper.

Hmmmmmmmmm, what about a decoy newspaper (the same one everyday) he can
fetch from somewhere nearby. He can retrieve this think that task is done,
then poop, then retieve the actual morning paper.
