Chloe, the 50lb lab mix, decided to climb thru the catdoor yesterday. She
has apparently hurt her back leg - it appears to be the area of the joint
that I would consider the "knee" area.
Today she isn't limping but when she does walk, she lets out a yelp when she
has to stand or sit again. She is in pain.
Today is Sunday and we are being hit by a hurricane - even the emergency vet
is closed. Currently she is laying down with an ice pack on that leg. I
figure the best thing is to treat it like a human injury, ice for the first
24, then heat.
For a dog, can you give them aspirin, ibuprofen, aleve? if so, which and how
much?
She certainly isn't herself today. At first I thought it was the storm, but
now I know its the leg. Either way, I feel so bad for my baby. >> Stay informed about: sore leg |

Just seen the news, seems you're having a bad time of it over there.
When our Doberman was in pain with hip problems, the vet said we could give
her HALF a paracetamol tablet (approx 100mg) every 12 hours. She was a lot
more comfortable. It was also good of the vet to suggest using a human
pill, rather than prescribing expensive animal ones - which did the same
thing.
But, do you have paracetamol on your side of the pond?
One more question; what on earth was she doing trying to climb through the
cat door??? :)

I did some research and it does appear that Tylenol and aspirin are ok.
We are watching her closely today. Her Spirits are good, but you can tell
she's sore. She's sleeping now, and I did ice it for a while earlier.
I'm not sure why she tried to get thru the cat door. The cat door is a
large one (opening is 8"wide x 12"high) and leads from our bedroom to the
lania (screened in pool area on the back of the home - also known as a
porch, pool cage, etc). The cat uses it to get out to the lania where her
litter pan is. Chloe has never tried to go thru it before.
The wind and poor weather had started and Chloe was on the lanai which is a
place she likes to hang out. Next thing you know she's inside and all the
door were closed. The only way she could have gotten is thru the lanai.
Her personality had changed a bit - she was cowering down like she had done
something wrong, but she didn't show any sings of pain. We thought she
either felt bad about coming thu the cat door and being caught (it was the
same type of response we get when she's gotten into the garbage pail or
something). Or I thought maybe the weather was getting to her, although
thunderstorms don't usually bother her much.
Thru-out the night last night every now and then she'd let out a yelp and
lift her leg so I thought maybe she had a burr in her foot or something.
Finally this morning I found it was the bend of the leg that appears to hurt
her. (she is not limping, but it does hurt her most when she stands up).
She is sleeping now. I'll call the vet tomorrow to make an appointment for
xrays.

Poor Chloe. Give her hugs and belly rubs. I hope this is something the vet
can fix easily.

She's doing amazingly better. Ya know, I love aleve for body soreness and
headaches, and I think Chloe does too. :)
She slept all day, and about 5pm I woke her up to see how she was doing.
She favored her leg when gettign up, came and crawled into my lap so I iced
her leg for a few more minutes, and then she decided that was enough and
wanted to go for a walk. We walked our usualy 1/2 mile walk and she even
jogged a bit. Since it was windy but with noone out I let her off leash
and she ran a bit. She came home, ate her food, drank and has been acting
pretty good since. She just brought me her rope to play a bit. >> Stay informed about: sore leg |

Our vet said enteric coated aspirin is better to avoid stomach upset.

Enteric Coated Aspirin
Q: I saw the Q&A on arthritis and your recommended treatment (aspirin). I
have been giving my 45 lb black lab/pointer 250 mg of buffered aspirin w/
his food each day and it seems to help. I've heard that enteric coated
aspirin is better than buffered. Do you agree. These tablets are harder to
cut; would 325 mg be ok daily?
A: k- There have been one, or possibly two, studies done that indicate that
enteric coated aspirin does not work well in dogs. Due to the differences in
digestive processes dogs do not seem to be able to routinely digest the
coating off the aspirin and many of the aspirin tablets are found whole in
the stool. Obviously, if the coating isn't digested the aspirin is not
effective.
The dose for aspirin is approximately 10mg/lb of bodyweight every 12 hours.
If less works, I'd use less. But if you need to, you can give your dog a
whole 5 grain aspirin tablet twice a day with no problem.
