Archived from groups: alt>pets>mice (more info?)

Hello all. I have had a female mouse, Miko, for about 2 weeks, now.
She's very active, with clear eyes and smooth, healthy fur. She eats
and drinks fine, and loves to run around and climb on toys.

I'm writing after reading mouseluverkerry's thread about her mice that
made "snuffling" noises that she thought were very cute, but then died.
I know that some of her mice apparently had lice, which might have
been part of the problem. But I'm a little worried, now, because Miko
is very vocal. She makes these little sneezy noises all the time. But
she doesn't act like she's sneezing and she doesn't have a runny nose.
Actually, she makes all sorts of little noises. I know that mice
supposedly talk to each other with hypersonic sounds that people can't
hear, but I can definitely hear these quiet, varied little sounds. My
other mice don't make these sounds. Miko makes a sneezy noise most
often when I approach her cage, or when another mouse approaches. She
also makes these tiny, high-pitched noises at times, and barely
perceptable, very low-pitched noises occasionally. When she makes
these sounds, she seems very relaxed and inquisitive. She really
doesn't seem sick.

Should I be concerned?

Find a vet who is very experienced with rodents and have Miko checked
out ASAP. Mice can get sick & die very quickly. It sounds like
something is definitely ailing her. You'll regret it if you don't take
her in to be seen & she dies. If you are using pine or cedar or any
other aromatic bedding then don't use it anymore and switch to
something non-toxic. I've been using oat-hull bedding. It is very safe
to use & cheap at $8 for 25 lbs. Also, read everything that you can
find about mice & rodents in general. There is a mouse breeder from
Wisconsin that should be able to help you so when I find her email I'll
email it to you.

Yes. Chattering, sneezing, or whistling noises are all indicative of
respiratory infection. These are common in mice and very difficult to
cure (in my experience). Carefully chosen antibiotics may get rid of it
or at least keep it at a manageable level. It's contagious so you
should keep her away from other mice. You will need to have her see a
vet ASAP.

I totally agree, in part, to the responses. Chattering, sneezing,
wheezing, etc can most definitely be a repository infection, such as
Myco. I would never tell someone not to see a vet. So keep that in mind
as I go on. It sounds to me like your mouse is talking to you,
literally. This may have absolutely nothing to do with an illness.
Since your mouse isn't actually sneezing nor have any other signs of
illness I would be willing to bet that she is doing what's known as
Bruxing. Mice can do this in various ways. Some kinda grind their teeth
or chatter them. Some click, some "kinda" sneeze, etc. I have had
several mice (all unrelated and not exposed to one another do to time
frame of having them) that have done their share of bruxing. They do it
when they see me coming and want attention. All of these mice have
lived to ripe old ages. Bruxing can be compared to a cat purring as
they often do it for the same reason (tho is sounds nothing like a cat
purr). For reassurance you can see a vet. They should be able to tell
you easily if there are any obstructions in their repository system
with a simple listen. I would definitely suggest a vet that has seen
mice or other pocket pets. Mice are so much different than other pets.
Some vets think that if they have seen rats then mice are the same.
Very misguided many times. When I moved to WI I used switchboard.com to
find vets (helped a lot more than the phone book oddly). I started at
the top of the list and went down. I wrote down valuable questions so I
didn't waste anyones time. I had a list of main health concerns, if
they even saw mice, cost, etc. It's sad that cost is an issue but in
reality, it often is. Good luck with your talker!
Take care,
Barbara
