Post subject: Damn snake food!!!
Archived from groups: alt>pets>rodents (more info?)

Hi,

Well, in search of a pink-eyed white female baby, I went to a petshop today
and lo and behold they had a whole tank full of pink-eyed white rat babies,
some females and some males, there must have been six or seven of them, two
of them were playing and the rest were resting in their little sleeping
dens, so gorgeous and so cute and friendly. I asked the guy if I could buy
one but they had all been reserved for a guy with a young diamond python. I
swear to God I was close to tears but I went back on the internet and asked
a few breeders to see if they knew of any available...so I contacted them
via e-mail and hoping to get some responses. I got a few responses so far,
and I believe I've secured a baby mink-self girl and a baby dove-self girl,
and now I think I've also secured a baby pink-eyed cream girl(champagne girl
descended from blue grandparents I believe) too, so I'm doing well so far,
but still searching for that elusive pinkeyed pure white.

I told the guy he was being a bit mean because he wouldn't even let me have
just one...boy I feel wierd right now...I feel some sort of pain for those
dear little creatures who are going to get clobbered over the head and end
up in some hungry snake's gut. But...there are plenty of fish in the
sea...so I will look elsewhere.

Oh well, I hope I have better luck.

Regards
KD

Snakes have a right to live as well as all other animals!
That said, there's plenty of frozen lab rats/mice etc available for reptile
food, so i cannot understand why the petshop owner had them on display like
this when he was obviously going to get enquiries about them, maybe you'd be
better finding a pet shop not ran by a weirdo!

Too true. I find that talking to the store clerks can be constructive in
changing the purpose that at least some of the rats they sell go to.

Over a month back I was in a pet store with my friend and I was looking at a
tank of normal and dumbo rats which had been in there for a few days. I asked
how much she wanted for the dumbo rats, and she told me they went for the same
price as all the rest (about $3 or so). We got to talking, and I found out that
she had a pet rat of her own, but didn't know much about the different fancy
kinds. She also told me that most of the rats went for snake food (not a
surprise).

The clerk got me out one of the dumbos to hold and I found he was very
friendly. I told her that the dumbos could go for much more that $3 and had
such a nice temperment they would make great pets. After paying her $3 dollars
I left with my new friend in tow.

Not long ago I was back in and found the dumbo rats had their own tank with a
sign which said 'Dumbo Rats: $9.35'. Most were gone (hopefully to good homes),
and the pet store made a three times as much as they would selling them as
'exotic pet rats' instead of snakefood grade rodents.

i couldnt understand why they would sell live rats as reptile food anyway as
theres a danger to the reptile of having its face chewed off!

dead rodents etc are freely available to snake/reptile owners, so why any
one would wish to feed a live animal to a reptile is a mystery.

Gerbil food - crickets - Will crickets climb out of an open-air tank? My gerbils live in a large uncovered tank, and I have been very worried about their lack of growth recently. They are mostly invisible gerbils, but occsionally I trap and examine them to see how they are..
