Too true. I find that talking to the store clerks can be constructive in
changing the purpose that at least some of the rats they sell go to.
Over a month back I was in a pet store with my friend and I was looking at a
tank of normal and dumbo rats which had been in there for a few days. I asked
how much she wanted for the dumbo rats, and she told me they went for the same
price as all the rest (about $3 or so). We got to talking, and I found out that
she had a pet rat of her own, but didn't know much about the different fancy
kinds. She also told me that most of the rats went for snake food (not a
surprise).
The clerk got me out one of the dumbos to hold and I found he was very
friendly. I told her that the dumbos could go for much more that $3 and had
such a nice temperment they would make great pets. After paying her $3 dollars
I left with my new friend in tow.
Not long ago I was back in and found the dumbo rats had their own tank with a
sign which said 'Dumbo Rats: $9.35'. Most were gone (hopefully to good homes),
and the pet store made a three times as much as they would selling them as
'exotic pet rats' instead of snakefood grade rodents.
