you know that "doggy" smell that some dogs get? is that breed related?
Lola doesn't smell like dog. she smells clean even when she rolls around in
the yard. i've never noticed any other pit bulls smelling bad either.
Manu, on the other hand, has this doggy odor about him. i just bathed both
of them last saturday, and by today, Lola smells the same as when i just
bathed her, and Manu smells, well, he smells like a dog. is this the Lab in
him? his hair is longer and much thicker than your average pit bull, maybe
the long hair traps smell more?
just curious to hear about other people's experiences.

Siberians are also pretty stink-free, but they tend to be
fastidious about keeping themselves clean (or rather about
cleaning themselves up after they've finished re-landscaping
your yard). Greta, a Collie-Newfoundland (probably) cross
was smellier, as were the terriers we've had. I've found
that boxers can get some stank going, as well. And then
there's elderly Rottweilers - whew!

Adding to that list, labs and GSDs. Next time I'm in the dog park
(probably this evening), I'll see if I can sniff a few dogs. In all
this time, I've never actually smelled a dobie, for example. Then
again, my sense of smell is severely imparired right now, so I don't
know if I can even smell wet dogs.

Some dogs just smell worse than others. My old dog, a Shepherd, had
strong body odor. After petting her, your hand would be covered with
something stick, and she would make your hand stink. You'll have to
wash your hands after petting her.
Our present dog is a Kuvasz / ACD X. He always smells fresh as a
daisy. U can bury you nose in his fur and he aways smells pretty. He
rolls around in the grass sometimes as well. Don't they all? >> Stay informed about: do some breeds smell more than others? |

My Pit used to REEK. I think it was a skin problem though. Once I started to
give him something called Dr. Maggie, he shed less and the smell went away.
We had to wash our hands after petting him too.

I think it may be breed related. None of my Chows ever had that "doggy" smell.

I wonder if it has something to do with bad skin. My GSDs don't stink unless
they've been jumping on the compost pile. I've known some dobes that had
horrible nasty skin and stunk to high heaven. I know that skin problems can be
pretty common in GSDs and labs so maybe that is part of why people think of
them as stinky. That and drop eared breeds. Yuck.

Yes...I know we've talked about this many times on here, I swear
most of the Hounds have a very doggy odor to them (esp. Bassets!).
And ESS & Cockers, but that could be due to the high numbers of them
that I meet that have skin and/or ear problems.
FWIW, longer hair has little to do with it, from my experience. My
Dad's lab, Molly, who swims daily (and isn't dirty) has much more
of a doggy smell than my own longer haired Boys.
Coda is quite clean smelling (aside from the lingering skunk smell on
his head). And Bodhi has a slightly musky smell, but I think it's
just because he occasionally pees on his belly hair!
I've not smelled any stinky dogs from the herding group (which is
what sorts of dogs I've had more contact with than others), aside
from a couple of Really Smelly Bouviers.

That is the first time I've ever heard anyone say a Boxer smelled. They
normally have absolutely no smell at all because their hair is so short and
they keep themselves very clean. I've yet to have a Boxer in my house that
had any odor. You'd have to literally stick your nose down on the dog and
sniff hard to smell anything. Now their breath is another story. IMO the
smelliest dog title should go to Labs & GSDs (from a sampling of mixes,
Boxers, Labs, GSPs, SSs & Rotties).

Yes, there's the issue of odor problems resulting from skin
conditions. Also, grain based pet "foods" will cause the dog to have a
bad body odor. >> Stay informed about: do some breeds smell more than others? |

Definite dog smell for beagles and labs. Same with my brother's golden.
(and I'm not saying it's a bad thing - just that it's there.)
The neighbor's boxer has much less than those dogs. I never come away from
petting him thinking I should go wash my hands.
Schnauzers - no smell at all. I've had people (mostly herding dog people)
at class comment that he must have just had a bath because he has no smell
at all. We *do* wash legs and beard about once a week but the rest of him
is on an as needed (or about-to-be-groomed) basis. I've never noticed much
odor from their herding dogs though.
Spenser's breeder once tried raising wire-haired dachshunds and she said she
could never get rid of their smell. I don't know if it's the wire-hair or
if the same is true of the smoothies.
I'd say it was because Spenser is clipped and therefore the wiry hair is
mostly gone - but none of his relatives at the breeders have any doggy odor
either and they're mostly in show (stripped not clipped) coat.
I'm off to a dog show today (to visit, not to participate) and I'll see who
I can smell.

RE: smelly dogs
I'm going to vote that it's neither grooming, brushing, bathing or
coat length that makes some dogs stinky.
Gotta be individual and breed oriented 'cause we never bathe our
Kuvasz / ACD cross. He gets brushed when shedding. Other than that...
we don't do anything with his medium length strait hair.
He rolls around in the dusty yard... but always smells daisy fresh.

i would vote the same way, simply because both of my dogs get their bath the
same day, spend the same amount of time being brushed, and play in the same
space outside together. the full pit bull smells like her oatmeal shampoo,
as though she's just been bathed. the pit x smells like a dog. :-)
