Glad you are all ok. Don't like our tornado thingfs but at least, we have a
chance of being safe from them, most of the time. When the earth shakes and
Clark Gable isn't around, I would worry.

We are just on the other side of Baldy from the quake and we did not
feel it. But some of the neighbors dogs were a little barky around that
time, so they might have.

The bedrooms are all on the second floor of our wood frame house, and I
think that makes it sway a bit more than if we'd have been on the first
floor. Probably also has something to do with the type of ground we're
on. Looks like this one was on the San Andreas, which scares the s*&^%
out of me (I'm a geologist, but not a seismologist).

Perhaps there is nothing that can be done to prepare for something that
destructive.
The East of North America is also due, sometime soon, for a large
Quake, but it could be a hundred years off, (???). And if it hit here,
I'm on the 3rd floor of a 21 storey apt. building. About the only
thing that could be good about it is that it would be a quick and
painless trip to the bridge. These buildings have survived two 4.5
quakes some years ago, but that's not anything big.
Structurally I think underground houses, strangely enough, would be
safer in an earthquake, because they would move with the ground all at
once, and not sway back and forth at least with the longditudinal
waves. The vertical shaking, (lateral waves), may crack some of the
structure.

It may sway more because the building's rocking is added to the ground
movement. The nice thing about being on the second floor is that there
is less structure to land on top of you. Still I think the best thing
to do is get out of the place at the first sign of movement, cats and
people and everybody!

Fred,
We're not likely to get a quake so destructive that it will level
everything, and bolting a house to it's foundation can save a whole lot
of damage (red tagged versus fixing lots of cracks).
The last thing you want to do in an earthquake is run outside. You are
more likely to be injured by something falling off the building than you
are if you stay inside.
I don't think I'd want to be underground in an earthquake!! Not sure why...

From what I have read of mine collapses, seismic activity is a prime
cause.
But a single-level "earth-shelter"-type house (partially underground)
might be the safest place to be. Single-story residential buildings
usually hold together long enough to get out as I understand it.
We have our "quake supplies" in a little shed away from the house. It
doubles as a black widow shelter :-)
