Hello,

What size of screen is needed for the top of a cage/tank containing
pet mice? The coarse screen, they can squeeze through. The fine
screen, they can gnaw through. What works?

Please respond to the newsgroup and not to my email.

Thank you!

I always used a screen that I made out of overlapped chicken wire when I housed
my one mouse in an aquarium. Of course she would escape occassionally, but it
was only at night and she would always end up sitting on the pillow of my bed.
You shouldn't have a problem with them chewing through the fine metal
screening, unless they are absolutely desperate to get free and they can reach
the top of the cage easily.

I use quarter-inch mesh "hardware cloth" -- zinc-coated
wire, avaliable at most large hardware & building-supply
stores -- for this, and have had no problems with
gnawing-through or squeezing-through. (It does tend to
corrode in corners where the mice urinate, after a year
or so, when used to construct the entire cage, but that
wouldn't be a factor with the top of an aquarium-type
container.)

A couple of weeks ago I bought a 1/4" x 1/4" wire screen lid from the pet
store in the mall(I know, bad place, but...). They had them for different
sized aquariums(mine's 10gal), and they were in the reptile section. I also
got a set of metal clamps by the same company that keeps it securely locked.
It all cost under $10... and it works great. We have 4 cats and they can't
get in, nor has the lid broken in(they like to sit on top and watch). Sorry
I don't remember the name of the manufacturer... just try reptile sections I
guess. :)

Cheers,
Nichole
