was in petsmart tonight. saw a mom and dad buying all the essentials for a
new bunny (or two). overheard them near the register and i stopped them.
they had a big bag of cedar chips, etc. told them cedar can cause lots of
problems. ok, the hubby goes back and gets the carefresh like i had.

after chatting they told me they were picking up two mini rexes tomorrow
from a breeder in north jersey. i tried to tell them that rabbits and kids
DON'T mix and i think the hubby saw my point but not the wife. oh, we saw
them at the state fair last summer and we want them. i told them rabbits
are cute and cuddly but not when you pick them up. especially the small
ones....since they are prey animals in the wild, they think they are going
to be dinner, etc.

told them all about rabbits and puberty and how they eat wires, etc. i
stopped telling them anymore cause i could see it was falling on DEAF ears.
i did mention rabbit.org three times. i hope like hell they go there.

i have a feeling there will soon be two mini rexes released into the woods
in the spring or dead.

God help them.

Husband didn't sound deaf. You make an impression my dear. :-) They'll
remember when cute little bunnies start spraying, humping and/or chewing.

Likely not deaf ears, but perhaps overwhelmed? You gave them a lot to
think about. Good info is never wasted.

Or maybe you planted the seed of caring in their heads. It was a
start that they went back for the CareFresh.

You can't control people, but you can try to influence them. You did
well, Mickey. I hope that the two lops benefit from your talking to
the people.

thanks anita. i left there with such a hopeless feeling. i wanted to give
them my phone number but if i did, and they told me the rabbits were dying
or something, i'd probably commit murder myself. i know, i can't save every
rabbit but it still hurts when i know how stupid people are.

At some point, each of us was a first time rabbit owner.

When Flower came to live with us, she was only a few weeks old. We didn't
dream that she would become such an integral part of our lives. We had no
idea how intelligent bunnnies were. Our daughter received her from her
third grade teacher. Every student in the class was given a baby bunny.
Needless to say, a lot of bunnies went back to school the next day, but
Flower got to stay. It took us a while to figure out that a bunny was a
huge committment. We had to to a lot of research (thank you Lord for the
internet) and learned so much we didn't have a clue about. When people come
to our home, they are amazed that a rabbit is such a good pet. They leave
with a whole new perspective about bunnies.

Maybe, these people will turn out to be bunny savvy and those two sweet
little babies will get lucky and that family will turn out to be good rabbit
slaves. Let's hope so, anyway. Until we can stop breeders and pet stores,
the fate of so many is at great risk. You did the right thing, trying to
let them know what a big deal owning a bunn is. Hopefully all will be well.
