Our 8 years chocolate has started developing scabs over his body , genital
area mouth ends of ears etc, these manifest as puscules that explode and
then scab over, hes not in any pain or discomfort and doesn't scratch them,
they seem to be inbeded into his fur as well coz if you pull the scab off it
brings fur with it, the scabs do not bleed when pulled off.
He is under the vet at the moment at he has an mite infection in his ears
which we dont seem able to clear up, had countless tests and having anti
biotics injected into ears daily but still not clearing up, The vet says
they are all conected, but I'm not so sure. The last scenario the vet wants
to try is to operate and cut away part of the ear cartlidge to allow direct
access to the ear canal, but only as a last resort. theyve tried growing
swabs in a petri dish from samples taken from his ears but nothing grows no
even yeast.
I'm now thinking the vet dont really know 6 weeks of anti biotics and still
no further forward.
Has anyone else ever come across anything like this ???
I would state again that our lab is not in any pain and you would only know
there was a problem because he keeps flapping his head from side to side
every now and again, or if the other lab catches his ears while they are
playing and he lets out a yelp.
Anything any shred of advice would be welcome
TIA >> Stay informed about: scabs over body |

I'd get a second opinion and get some skin scrapings to see what's with the
pustules. Also have you tried going with a raw diet or an elimination
allergy diet? Lots of times when you have severe skin issues and ear issues
it's food related to something they are allergic to.

This Vet we are using is our 2nd opinion one and in all honesty he did
suggest it might be allergy related, the old by is startig to get on in
years now as he's nearly 9 hweer ver since we hav had him he's been on th
same brand, type of food which he laps up and lves, so unless its developed
allergy then i was thinking more lke its our scs we give them as to were the
allergy arises but in saying all that I am going to chnge his diet as o tday
and lets see ifhat makes anydifference.

It's not unusual for manufacturers to change something and not note it on
the bag for up to 6 months so in all likelyhood something in the food has
probably changed.
My dog Barney over his life time developed food allergies to 5 different
brands of dog food it was never as severe as this but it does happen more
frequently than you realize.

Is he on any medication for arthritis? The reason I ask is
because my 9 year old choc has the same skin problem,
or so it seems by your description of those bloodless
scabs, and the vet reckons it's because of the medication
he's on to relieve his arthritis. >> Stay informed about: scabs over body |

I am not sure if you are in the UK.
I would have your dog referred to somewhere like Cambridge.
My last dog had horrendous trouble with her skin.
They thought it was Ringworm or as bad as Cancer.
After tests it was neither
I had to give her antibiotics and baths, none of which did any good.
It turned out to be as simple as a food allergy.
In fact it was Chicken.
Yet Bonnie had been fed chicken all her life due to Pancreas trouble.
Good luck.
