Well, I got up this morning and, after getting my 16 yr old step-son off to
school, went in to double check that all the mice had plenty of food and
water. (He's 16, he forgets to check those things once in a while, so i
double check regularly.. for which the mice are always grateful when i catch
an empty bowl or bottle, or particularly stinky cage...)
I checked up on th boys first, still no problems witht them, but one of the
things on my list today os getting more tunnels and looking for some cheap
shelving to set them up on when we seperate them. Then I went over and
check out the girls' big tank. Where I spotted our little PEW, Morty, laying
on the middle shelf (the one that's right between the two doors and hard to
get at) lying on her side... Poor little thing had passed on. We're not
sure how old she actually was, but we had always figured she was the oldest
mouse we had. We had her for just over 2 months, and she was one of the
first ones we were able to train to not be scared of the hand. She was our
alpha female,so had picked on the other girls til they knew her place.. :)
When I checked her after pulling her out, there were no visible bite marks
or other injuries, so right now, we're assuming it was natural causes, that
she was an old mouse who's time had come. We're fairly certain she was kept
in the feeder/breeder tank at the pet store, since the "went and got her"
out of the back room (she was a "replacement" on one that'd gotten
accidently crushed by one of the toys in their tank).
we'll miss her, but with 14 other mice still around, she won't be getting
replaced anytime soon.
