Don't be nervous at all. Older dogs are neutered all the time without
incident. Its a few days of discomfort, and then they're over
it....that's one of the amazing and fantastic things about dogs.

As most of us have experienced, and said in this thread, in an older dog
that's just being neutered, the drooping skin just takes a few weeks to
tighten back up. That's only because the testicles have stretched the
skin and it can take a little for that much skin to tighten....but
tighten it does!

And, yes, I think neutering is something you can do for yourself to help
make the housebreaking issues a bit easier.

In terms of your questions in the behavior group, I would get my hands
on the book _Training the Family Dog_ by Dr Patricia McConnell as soon
as you possibly can.

You have a lot of valid questions about corrections and about how to
teach behaviors, that I think it would be best for you to get your hands
on a comprehensive methods of how to go about it, that's written in a
good, straighfoprward way. That book is pretty good on those levels.

Umm...
I'd have left "for yourself" out of this sentence. It brings up some
odd images.

You know, there are times when its just better to stop when I'm ahead.

Not that I was ever "ahead", but quitting before losing coherency would be
a nice change :-)

Tara:

I have written down the name and author of the book you recommended and
am off to look for it today.

I am still nervous about it, but will get the book.

So you realize he is undergoing the long, slow treatment for HW? I
don't know if that will make a difference if I can or cannot have him
neutered at this time. I will of course check with the vet on this
issue.

Thanks again,

Mickee

Your best bet is to find an online source. A bookstore isn't terribly
liikely to have it, but plenty of online booksellers would.

Nervous about what part?

Absolutely. I *did* forget about that part! Its extremely likely that no
surgery will be performed until he's well. All the more reason to get the
book and start training him.

You might as well....he's tied to you all day long! Might as well put all
that bonding time to good use :-)

Nervous about what part?

I am nervous about surgery at all, given his age and health issues of
the HW. I just hate surgery, period whether it be a pet or myself.

Ah, gotcha. I couldn't tell if you were nervous about housebreaking, or
about the training, or about bringing him inside or what.

That makes sense. I'm the same way.

No I am not nervous about the housbreaking or any of that, just the
surgery. It is getting old now only 1 week out though. I wonder if he
will be trained or will I be the one trained. IT is getting old in this
cold, wet weather.
