I have a large dog who has been recently nutered, day 6 to be exact.
He is a year and a half old, and the vet said he had massive testicles.
His scrotum is still quite large, almost like he still has testicles.
More like and empty sac or deflated balloon.
What I want to know is if this is normal? My girlfriend thinks its
swelling, but it looks to me that nothing was done in sugery
cosmetically. From other nutered dogs I have seen they have a tidy
little sac.
I am concerned that this will not change and he will have this huge
scrotum blowing in the wind that could get caught on something and tear
or rip. It is not very pretty either.
Thanks for you time.

Hi Janet B,
Thank you very much for your response. Was this offered to you or did
you have to ask or inquire?
I thought the scrotal ligation is what they do, a "given" you could
say.
It is a sad sight right now and I feel really bad. At times I regret
getting it done. I want the very best for my dog, and if it stays the
way it is, it is far from the best. I guess time will tell.
Please if anybody else can let me know what experiences you have had,
it would be much appreciated.
Cheers,

Hi Tara,
I first want to thank you for your response.
It is weird that you say that. I have only posted on google groups ->
rec.pets.dogs.breeds and I only remember posting it once. If you could
point me to a link where I say it twice that would be great. Maybe
google is crossposting it somewhere else? I dont know. Sorry for that.

Thanks Tara.
And in a strange way, I am glad I am not the only one with this
concern.
I think I am being overly concerned because I am a male and that is our
worst nightmare. He also gives me the "oh no you didnt" look, which
doesnt help.
Thanks you all for your help, I will sleep better tonight know my dog
wont blow away on me in strong winds.
Cheers,

They can do a scrotal ligation and probably should have. The rescue I
work with took in a senior dog recently who had very impressive
cajones. We had the extra tuck done to make sure he wouldn't be
damaged by those extra bags!

I think it's best for everybody concerned, and my experience
has been that the scrotum really does dry up and recede
quite a bit. If you're concerned talk to the vet but
without knowing anything about your dog or what size we're
actually talking about, there doesn't seem to be anything
surprising here.

We asked to have it done. This boy was HUGE. Most scrotums do look
large and saggy after neutering, but shrivel up pretty well and become
almost invisible in most dogs. The age of the dog we had done was a
big factor - unlikely to spring back at all.

Way back "when", I had my year and a half old German Shepherd Dog neutered,
and he had those "deflated balloons" too. That was only because the skin
was forced to grow along with the testicles, and when the testicles were
suddenly "gone", the skin needed time to adjust. Took severl wekks, but he
ended up with no extra skin.
You've mentioned several times, in two different dog groups, regretting
having it done.
May I ask why?

You're very welcome. I know I used to look at those deflated balloons
flapping back and forth hoping like hell they'd somehow get sucked back
into his body. I'd just cringe when I looked at them.

You're absolutely right. I was too lazy to check the other group to see if
you were the same person. It was just a few days ago, and they said almost
the same thing, so I jumped to a conclusion. Sorry about that.
And welcome to the group!

His, um, deflated airbags will retract on their own. My parents had a
BC neutered at 8 years of age and it was a sad sight at first but
everything shrank down and tightened up within a matter of a few weeks.
I felt really awful about putting my own male BC through neutering
because he had an undescended testicle which meant that he was spayed
and neutered at the same time. One incision to the scrotum to remove
the testicle that had dropped, and a second one to the belly to remove
its mate that was eventually located up near his kidney.
Nevertheless, the surgery spared him the risk of testicular cancer (a
serious concern with an undescended testicle) and spared me the concern
about unplanned puppies.
Even considering the issues related to his more complicated surgery I
have no doubt in my mind that the surgery was harder on me than him. >> Stay informed about: Dog recently nutered - Day 6 - Need answers! |

Oh, you're not.
I am rabid about responsible breeding practices, and speutering all pets
that aren't going to be taken and trialed/worked/tested
yaddayaddayaddaed and possibly bred.
With that said, I have felt a vague guilt every time I've taken one of
mine in for The Snip. I think its just natural. We're asking them to go
through a lot. Its the right thing to do, but asking our pets to endure
massive surgery shouldn't be taken lightly, IMO. So, I know what you
mean.
> I think I am being overly concerned because I am a male and that is

Heh. I reacted MUCH more strongly when I took my little girl pup in for
her spaying (a moth or so ago) then I *ever* did with any of my males.
Being a female myself, it makes sense, but I thought my experience and
knowledge would mitigate that.
It didn't. I felt soooooooo guilty :-)

That is definitely a Boy Thing :-)

Nope. He's a big strong boy. And hey, if they don't recede fully, you
could always have clown faces tatooed on them.

After reading this thread I am really nervous about my baby now. He is
6.5 years old and I have never had him neutered as I did not feel the
need. He never gets out of the yard to reproduce, etc. But, now I am
trying hard to finally once and for all get him housebroken and am told
I cannot do this without neutering. So on to the surgery. He is a
doxie, but very large in that area as compared to the rest of him. I
don't want him droopy and draggy. Do I ask for a scrotal ligation,
will they do it anyway. I feel awful putting him through this at his
age, but feel it must really be necessary.
HELP!!!!

Just thought I would give you all an update. This is day 7 and we can
finally take off his
cone/Elisabethan collar/lampshade tonight, it made it so hard for him
to play with his toys, eat and drink.
His junk looked a lot better today. Smaller, tighter, and better
looking.
I want to thank you all for your responses. I feel better and a helluva
lot less concerned, and without a frantic call to the vets.
Cheers!
