Our hamster (syrian breed) recently developed a lump in his back. The lump
later developed a scab on top of it which then cratored inward like an
abcest wound. My friend called her vet to find one that deals with
hamsters, which we did end up taking him to. The vet said it was possibly a
tumer (sp?) & because it was just under the surface of the skin & didn't
look like it was attached to anything then we didnt have to do anything
about it right away (but could if we wanted to). I had more important
things going on so we decided to wait...the vet did say we could put
neosporin on the wound to help it heal or at least keep it clean. Well the
wound hasn't healed up but they were right that it's not got infected at all
(stays a nice shiny blood red like the inside of a hamster or any living
tissue should look like). It's been like this for about 2 weeks now (since
we saw the vet) & now the hamster's fur doesn't look normal due to some of
the extra neosporin getting in his fur (it looks like the hamster got wet &
his fur dried in that wet fur type of look). What is the best way to clean
him up? We'd like to get him clean before the vet Wednesday (they're going
to remove it that morning). The hamster is still pretty active. Though not
as active since he won't go through any tubing or run in his wheel because
of his size it would constantly be rubbing on his spot on his back, but he
does play in his ball (when he's not sleeping) & is active if you take him
out & hold him & play with him in your hands or just out on the
table/bed/floor. And his wound (about the size of one of those gold coin
dollars...U.S. year 2000 coin dollars) still looks normal fresh blood &
hamster insides color (which is also good).
