Post subject: how often should she poop?

Hi All,
We adopted a 5 month old Standard Poodle
on Saturday. She arrived at her new home
at 8 p.m. and ate very, very little that night.
Yesterday she ate fairly well, although not as
much as I would expect (she's still settling in
and is missing her best friend and her mom).
However, she has not pooped at all yet. She has
urinated very regularly (and never in the house,
yay!), but that's it. At what point should I
be concerned? And also, once her system settles
down and she becomes "regular" how often a day
does a 5 month old puppy go poop? We live in
the city and need to take her for "potty" walks
and I'm trying to get a feel for how often we
should be doing this (right now I take her
out every hour or two).
Thanks! This is our first dog EVER and we are
having to learn everything via "trial by fire".

She still settling in, though I'd be concerned after a full
three days (unless there are other problems - like vomitting).
Call the rescue society you got her from and ask for their
advice.
Once she's settled down, expect her to defecate once for each
meal plus one. As she's still a puppy, maybe once more. So, if
you're feeding her 3 times a day (which, IMO, you should be at
this stage), she'll probably need to go 4 times, maybe 5, maybe
3. Heh, as you can tell, it's not an exact science. Give it
time and you'll pick up on her "I gotta go oustide!" cues. For
the time being, put her on a schedule - take her out after every
meal and every play session, first thing on the morning and last
thing at night. Praise and treat when she goes.
Exercise will help move the food through her body, too. A short
walk a few times a day might help.

My experience is that in some ways dogs are not that different from humans.
Pooping frequency varies by dog, but is more frequent with pups. Exercise
helps "move things along" in dogs and people! Fiber in the diet is also an
issue. Always have treats ready if she poops in the right place (ie
outside). Just say "no" firmly if she poops in the house and obviously no
treat. The initial weeks are always VERY HARD on the poor dog and probably
you too. So, good luck, and congratulations on a "city dog."

Why on earth would you correct a dog for doing something she
doesn't know is wrong?

You said more than that, though. You gave instructions to
correct the puppy for doing something that she wasn't taught not
to do.

While it's cool to see that Rich has changed he's mind, I don't

Thanks all for the responses. Shortly after I
posted this, she, uh, donated a stool sample
(well-puppy check was today). I'll follow the
general rule of taking her out after meals
and watching her like a hawk for "signals" of
having to go potty. So far (since Sat. night)
she has had zero accidents - I hope to keep it
this way! :)

I'm not quibbling about words, just technique. Correcting a
puppy for pooping in the house will often teach the puppy to be
afraid of you - not the result I believe you're after.
I have no problem with what you said in a later post when you
referred to timely interruption and distraction. Your original
post advised a correction prior to the interruption which, IMO,
is inappropriate and is why I responded to it.

That's good! Don't forget that she's young - while she'll
naturally want to keep her environs clean, your house is
probably too large for her to recognise the enire place as "her
own" yet. Supervision and anticipation (and sometimes patience)
are the keys to housetraining. And cleaning up all accidents
with an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle.
