Hello, my eleven week old Maddy, has now started going crazy when playing.
If we are playing outside she gets the crazies and starts biting me. She'll
grab me anywhere she can. It's not her normal play biting, it's almost like
she's in a rage. My lab mix that recently passed away did the same thing.
Is it normal for labs? We start puppy school next week, but I am hoping
someone can give me some advice. I know she's not trying to be mean, but I
want to stop the behaviour while she is still 15 pounds and not 65. She's
so smart and great in all other ways, and this is my only concern with her.
Thanks,
Diane >> Stay informed about: play biting out of control |

Hi Diane. I had the same problem with Maggie when she was young. None
of the recommended things worked. I finally pinned her to the ground,
stared at her while growling at her and yelled no. Even then it took 3
times. After that she never did it again. I did it consistently 3
times in a row, never letting her get away with it inbetween. My
husband kept trying all the other things that were suppose to work until
she drew blood on his chin when he was sitting in the floor. That made
him mad enough that he did the same thing I had done. She never did it
again to anyone after that. So if all the other recommendations you get
fail, try it as a last resort. Good luck! :-) >> Stay informed about: play biting out of control |

Hi
This is not a "lab problem" only...many puppies try this while 'pushing your
buttons'. The pup is pushing you...see where the point is that you loose
control of the situation or/and unable to maintain control and keep her in
her place in the pack order. Every time she gets out of hand like this, a
time out. You need to get her to submit to you, for you to make her
understand that 'you' the pack leader finds this behavior totally out of
line. The best way is to pin her down, either flip her on her back and hold
her there until she stops struggling and submits or just use her collar and
pin her down. No talking, you make eye contact...'think godlike look here',
DONT SMILE, DON"T LAUGH. This is not a fun situation. Her mother would
have done that to her, pin her down, when disciplining the litter...like the
book...Mother Knows Best. :)
Also tell you instructor next week the puppy grabbing is getting out of hand
and you feel she is trying you on for size :).
Good luck.
Cheers

you could try grabbing the lower jaw and use your thumb to apply pressure on
the tissue below the tongue and say NO. I had to do this twice with my old
neighbors puppy due to they didn't train/discipline there dogs enough, but
they behave with me. >> Stay informed about: play biting out of control |

Just send her in a quiet corner and show her you are not well pleased.
She will know
Make her stay quiet until you are happy to free her.
A few years back I had a bit of trouble ie very playful GSD.
I got a trainer in for some advice he gave her a bit of rough stuff.
Not cruel I might add....just put her to the ground.
Trouble was as she was quickly hyped up,it made her far worse.
With a Labrador calm is the order of the day I think.
Pat.

Dear Diane,
Maybe all labs do this as puppies. They get the "lab crazies", running like
the devil, crashing into people biting at them, etc. What I did was grab
Hawkeye out of the air as he was lunging at me and I threw him to the ground
and growled at him in a really harsh voice..."NOOO". I had to do it two or
three times but he's never done it again. Hawkeye is two years old now and
he still get's the "lab crazies" once in a while but he never slams into us,
just runs by at Mach 3 just missing us, little bastard :-)

I got a 11 year old that does that every so often. So, you might want to get
use to it. She does not do it to me, but the wife and kids seem to be fair
game for her. As are any other visitors to the house.
