The iceberg that was about to collide with a cape in the Antarctic seems to
have stopped a few kms short, according to the news today. So the penguins
still have to waddle about 100 kms more to get to their chicks. I hope it
will soon get moving again.

Hey folks, in case you havent realized it by now, this is the PIGEON board, NOT
the Penquin board....We can explain the difference if you dont know...

Well, I couldn't find one on the newsserver that I had access to,
or I'd have cross-posted to it, and eventually attempted a follow-up
to it, to direct the traffic to the newsgroup that was most appropriate.

As for true hybridizations, don't genetic engineers routinely attempt
to do this, to find out how far apart (in terms of nucleotide sequences)
the different bird species are?

Now, as for a chimaera that is more or less viable, perhaps even
fertile, I have nothing against somebody making that attempt. It
would be a noble step forward in propagating a species with traits
that might be very helpful.

But ordinary penguins have one egg a year? And pigeons, what, maybe
a dozen a year?

That's about right.

(Some idiot is now posting "Penguins are the best birds " over and over
here, ignore him.)

There is a domestic fowl - quail chimera on the internet. (Images in
Google). And a man-mouse chimera embryo is used in medical research.
The chimera is a genetic jigsaw, the various pieces are separate. The gonads
would be one species or the other. I doubt if natural breeding could take
place, at our present stage of knowledge.

Maybe rec.birds would be a good group for this discussion.

after endless postings about this OFF TOPIC, please remind me
how this has anything to do with rec.pets.birds.pigeons????
Crap like this is one of the reasons this ng will never go anywhere.
Tens of thousands pigeon fanciers in the US alone, not to say how
many pigeons fanciers world wide and what do we get, Penguins.
:-(

There ought to be a "penguin nucleotide sequencing chart" that I could
print out somewhere.

|> Now, as for a chimaera that is more or less viable, perhaps even

|
|That's about right.

I think there's a handful of penguin species, aren't there? Aren't
some of them much more closely related than others? Nucleotide
sequencing is the usual way of denoting the evolutionary distance
between closely related species?

|There is a domestic fowl - quail chimera on the internet. (Images in
|Google).

What, you mean the common chicken has been crossed with the quail?

I can see the practical use of crossing a chicken with a turkey,
but a quail?? Um, okay. And science marches ever on...

|And a man-mouse chimera embryo is used in medical research.

Indeed, that is legendary, if not reknowned. As for the cross of
buffalo (American Bison) and European cow, there is a lot more
practical use that that animal can be put to.

|The chimera is a genetic jigsaw, the various pieces are separate. The
|gonads would be one species or the other.

From what I understand of it, the scientist takes embryos from
two or more couples and pushes them together to the point of
overcoming the various egg walls, and merging them together. If
the embryos all come from the same species, you get an offspring
with characteristics of multiple parents. However, if the embryos
all come from separate species, and you push them together, you'd
get an offspring with characteristics that ought to be representative
of the separate species, so far as their traits can be expressed
without direct conflict. Always an interesting topic.

|I doubt if natural breeding could take place, at our present stage
|of knowledge.

Well, if one of the penguin species faces extinction because of a
catastrophic change to its native environment, as with that iceberg
near New Zealand closing off and starving the penguins there, their
genes could be rescued if there were an ambitious program afoot to
produce chimaeras between the various penguin species. As for other
species like pigeons contributing their material to the penguins,
I'm not sure which traits should be aimed for.

|Maybe rec.birds would be a good group for this discussion.

Okay, I added it to the header, and supplied a followup to direct
traffic away from rec.pets.birds.pigeons.
