I have a problem. Whenever I leave the room he shrieks in dissaproval.
Any way of teaching him to be more tolerant? He was very insecure when I
got him but now he owns me.

Try to substitute a contact call. I whistle back and forth with my birds
when I leave the room. When we first got our U2 she was screamer. We
NEVER rewarded the scream. Not ever. She would scream even if she was
out of her cage and in the same room. She thought she should be held
every second of every waking moment. I would just leave the room if she
was screaming. If she was quiet or making a pleasant noise I would tell
her she was pretty and pick her up. Now if she screams (not very often)
I say where is pretty and she quiets down and says pretty in a quiet
voice. This sounds crazy, but I also explain to the birds that I will
be outside or doing laundry or whatever and whistle back and forth. The
grey has never been loud and the U2 has pretty much learned to be quiet.
Please note I am not including that loud jungle type happy to be a
cockatoo sound. It is just the shrill "pick me up, I am a spoiled brat"
scream. This did not happen overnight. It has taken a long time of
consistently ignoring undesired behavior and rewarding the desired behavior.

Substitute calls work for my Grey as well, though I find that there are
times she seems more needy than others. It will take some time to
retrain them. You might also try www.clickertraining.com. My vet
recommended it. -- HC

Thanks Debbie, we do contact call back and forth, the shriek happens
when I start to leave the room, like a "Please don't go!" shout. This
happens every time and I ignore it, sometimes happens when he can't
actually see me but we do whistle to each other when I'm not in the room.

Are you sure it's disapproval? My grey enjoys screaming. She wants to
get someone involved in a screaming match for two or three good shrieks.
Follosing this, she laughs. It doesn't matter if we're in the room or
not--she just likes to scream.

My CAG Max will do a shrill shriek just to get me going , after that I
realized i cannot reward him by coming to it.
I now give them all chamomiel tea before i have to lay down to take a
nap on the weekends. It seems to calm them and make them a bit sleepy
or not as noisey. Then my timneh connor likes to imatate the starlings
OMG that is a high pitched shrill !

Your parrot doesn't own you, he just can't stand to be without you, you
are everything to him.
