Post subject: Is it better to have papers on a dog? (I want to buy a full breed pup)
Archived from groups: rec>pets>dogs>breeds (more info?)

I am very interested in buying a dog. I know that by having papers, the dog
will have some history from where it comes from. Though, it will cost much
more to pay for a dog with paperwork then with one without paperwork. I just
want to make the best choice here, for me and my family. Does anyone have any
suggestions?

if you're not breeding or showing, papers aren't really worth much to most
people. i'd recommend checking the local breed rescue organization for the
breed you're interested in. you'll be able to find a dog that may or may
not have papers, at a much lower price. as an added bonus, most will be
temperament tested and will have basic health care needs met
(spayed/neutered, shots, deworming etc). if you can't find your dog at
breed rescue, a dog with AKC or UKC papers, from a responsible breeder, is a
good second bet. i wouldn't buy from someone who doesn't register they're
pups because they're probably not a responsible breeder.

anecdotally, i've never owned a papered dog, but i have a papered Bengal
cat, and he has had more health problems than my other three pets combined.
so don't assume papers will guarantee anything.

i'd like to point out that this is only true for respectable organizations
like the AKC, UKC, CanadianKC, etc. you can get a puppy registered with
ConKC, USKC, ABR, FIC, or any of the other "puppy mill registries", just by
sending them some cash. the fact that a dog has "papers" doesn't mean much
if the papers are from scam registries.

Also, names on a pedigree mean nothing if they are poor quality dogs...
or if you know nothing about those dogs.

I can tell you a great deal about many of the dogs in my guys'
pedigrees... but that's because I took the time and made the effort, and
because I personally knew a few of them.

A hint.... there is no such thing as a full breed or full blooded dog.
The term is purebred.

One thing that IS important is that you have as much knowledge as
possible about the breed. And the information on the pick-your-pet type
web sites is not necessarily correct. Use the research skills you got
shoved down your throat in high school.... <grin> and read what people
who have owned the breed, bred, trained and exhibited them in field
trials, obedience trials, agility trials (training and performance with
a dog gets you right to their inner selves!) Read at least one book
about the breed (from any publisher except TFH). Know and understand
what the job was that the breed was developed to do, and how that
effects it's personality, structure, temperament and training profile
today. (I am constantly amazed that Labrador Retriever puppy owners
don't link the word "retriever " in a breed's name to a puppy's tendency
to "hold hands" gently with it's mouth <chuckle>.)

Turn it into a project! Have fun! Good luck!
