SOMEBODY has been messing with Zane's stuff*. Somebody put some kind
of lid on Zane's pond! It's cold and it's hard and it's slippery. He
can see the water but he can't step in it or drink it.
He tried pronking up and down on it and it wouldn't budge. Couldn't
dig through it. Throwing himself down and trying to bite it with his
side teeth didn't work either.
Meanwhile Cooper is standing on the shore egging him on with excited
yapping that only stopped when he vaulted into my arms after Zane
rounded on him wearing that "Zane's frustrated and somebody's going to
pay" look on his face.

*Zane's stuff includes not only his personal belonging like toys and
dishes, but also his friends and family, the household vehicles, the
house, the yard, the trails where we hike and the Canine Country grounds
where he plays.

Don't think I didn't think about that.

When I came up over the hill and saw him out on the ice I nearly
swallowed my tongue. The thought of having to paddle my big self out
there on my belly to retrieve him was not especially appealing. The ice
was a good 2-3" thick, though, and while I wouldn't have felt safe
standing out there I felt fairly confident that a 41 lb. dog wouldn't be
able to break through, even hopping up and down with all four feet close
together.

That's pronking. He does it any time there's ice and only when there's
ice and it amazes me as much as it amuses me. How does he know to try
to concentrate the force of his jumps in a small spot?

Pretty near. The next morning I felt like I'd been doing sit-ups.

Dogs are hard-wired to do that, I think. It's pretty common
to see them punch through the snow with their front paws
together.
