Get used to it ;) our 2 are both better than 60lbs and they also hate
water.

I would suggest the cordless dremel...grind their nails. Its much quicker and
less painful than cutting and they get the hang of it pretty quickly...just do
one toe at a time, praise, cookie, break. Soon they will be letting you to all
the toes!

I have used a Dremel for years and can attest to how well it works. We had
the cordless model, but it never held a good charge and therefore sometimes
didn't have enough power to get the job done quickly. Also, it sometimes
needed to be recharges when we wanted to use it. After replacing the
rechargeable battery a few times, we switched to a corded model which has
plenty of power and seems to be a bit quieter. We use the red sanding
drums.

As for the dogs, I find that you can extinguish or at least dampen the
reflex behavior of them pulling their feet back by frequently touching the
feet. Eventually they will stop reacting. Over time, you can change from
touching to holing and then manipulating the feet without a struggle. This
won't completely eliminate the issues with nail trimming, but it will lessen
the intensity. Just remember to touch the feet every time you pet them.

To control the flailing, you can wrap them in a blanket with only one foot
exposed.

I just bought a cordless one this year and it holds a charge great! Maybe new

Ours worked well at first, but the battery tends to lose its ability to hold
a charge after a while. Then, it started to lose the charge in storage and
take a long time to recharge. Eventually, it couldn't be recharge. It
became inconvenient because when I wanted to use it, it wouldn't be ready
and it is costly to replace the battery. The corded model has a lot of
torque and is ready at a moment's notice.

What attachment/bit/drum do you use to do the grinding? I use the red
sanding drums.

Our old man (10 years +) has developed very hard calloused on his pads. I
though he had a stone stuck in his pad and upon closer examination, it was a
large, hard growth. The vet removed it and the biopsy indicated that is was
just keratin. I use the drum to grind the hard spots and ridges down when I
do the nails. Have you ever heard of anything like this? It seemed to be
new to the vet. This dog has always had strange feet. When he was young,
the pads where very large and soft. Now they have become quite firm and
calloused, especially where they meet.

Another strange thing about him is that he is changing color. He is a black
horse coat. In the last year he has developed a brown saddle with strange
black spots!

I imagine that overtime, all rechargeable batteries will loose their
"oomph"...I don't know the cost of a new battery component, but I do know that
its much easier to handle than my corded one and its quieter.

I had been using a stone with my old corded one...tried the sand paper wrap
ones that came with this dremel and OMG! How much easier they were!

I know that keratin is often a defensive mechanisme of the body so, maybe he
had a bad stone bruise or a nick that had trouble healing and the body
overreacted in protecting it....

don't know about the color! Not unusual for them to get age spots on the SKIN
but...to develop a saddle...hmmm....he's just a unique kinda guy!

He has developed age spots all over his skin. The coat is quite strange
though. At first I though maybe it was just beached from the sun, although
he is such a couch potato that he rarely goes outside to sunbath.
