Hi all

I have a 14 month old female who could be pregnant. My male mice escaped
twice in the last month during the night. If they were able to get to my
female Cadbury she would be 24 days into the pregnancy or 11 days. Is it
likely she could still be pregnant after 24 days? What is the longest time
for the gestation period. Also would it be that noticable at 11 days?

Cadbury is in poor health and has a very bad skin condition she's almost
bald now and has cloudy eyes, so I don't think she can see much. So if she
did have any I don't know what their chance of survival would be. She shares
a cage with another female of a similar age.

So how long is the gestation period can it be longer than 24 days?

Not really at 11 days, she dosent 'show' until 14 or 15 days.
If she had gone 24 days, she would be the size of a grapefruit!

21 days is the norm, sometimes a bit more or less but not by much, if she
starts to swell in the next week or so, she may have been caught during the
last escape.

BTW, how can the males get into their cage?

Hi phil

Cadbury never used to be this big, I have had one previous litter of mice
and she looks pregnant to me but I don't think she can be it's now 25 days.
I wonder if it might be a tumour, but I have never seen tumours like this
before.

At the time of the boys escape I had a book on top of the girls cage
covering an open entrance to where a door used to be. That morning the book
had been moved.

fourteen months is a bit young to have serious physical problems. are you
keeping the mice in pine wood shavings? if so get a different kind of bedding
immediately, preferably some kind of paper bedding. pine has phenols, and over
time this builds up in the liver and overloads it.

give cadbury a bit of boiled egg every day, and add a piece or two of dry cat
food to her regular food. making babies is hard work and some mothers become
protein starved during pregnancy.

It could well be that she just isn't able to pass the babies (is this an
older mouse ?) In our case the vet was able to check via ultrasound and then
tried giving her an injection to induce more contractions (which didn't work
in our case, it was off to the operating table.)
